The spread of hoaxes on social media has become one of the major challenges in the digital era, as it contributes to misinformation, social conflict, and declining public trust in information. This study aims to analyze the dissemination of hoaxes on social media from the perspective of Islamic law based on the principle of tabayyun. The research employed a qualitative literature review by examining the Qur'an, Hadith, and relevant national and international scholarly publications on hoaxes, digital communication ethics, and the principle of tabayyun. The findings indicate that spreading hoaxes contradicts the principle of tabayyunbecause it neglects the obligation to verify information before sharing it with others. Furthermore, such practices are inconsistent with the Islamic values of truthfulness (ṣidq), responsibility (amanah), and the objectives of Islamic law (maqāṣid al-sharī'ah), which emphasize the protection of public welfare and the prevention of harm. Therefore, the principle of tabayyunremains highly relevant not only as an ethical guideline for social media use but also as a normative foundation for fostering responsible digital communication in the contemporary information era.
