Abstract

A person's nutritional status in the form of overweight and obesity depends on the daily calorie intake obtained from food. Packaged foods with high sugar, salt, and calorie content, such as Ultra Processed Food (UPF), can affect the balance of a person's daily calorie intake. This study aims to determine the relationship between UPF consumption and the incidence of overweight and obesity in Andalas University Medical Education students. This is an analytical research with a cross-sectional design conducted on Andalas University Medical Education students. Data were collected using consecutive sampling and included student characteristics as well as UPF consumption levels assessed via a Food Frequency Questionnaire (FFQ). Bivariate analysis was performed using the Pearson Chi-square test. The results showed that frequent UPF consumption was observed in 54.1% (59/109) of respondents. The overall prevalence of overweight and obesity was 36.7% (40/109). Bivariate analysis revealed no statistically significant association between the level of UPF consumption and the incidence of overweight-obesity ( across four BMI categories; binary analysis: ). This study concluded that there was no significant association between ultra-processed food consumption and overweight or obesity in this population. Future research is expected to use more comprehensive nutritional assessment parameters and longitudinal designs.
