Abstract

Exposure to cigarette smoke from parents, commonly referred to as parental smoking, is an important environmental risk factor that may negatively affect children’s respiratory and overall health. Exposure can occur during pregnancy as well as after birth, increasing children’s vulnerability to various health problems, particularly respiratory disorders such as asthma, bronchitis, and other chronic conditions. Growing awareness of the harmful effects of secondhand smoke on children has encouraged the rapid development of research on this topic in many countries worldwide. This study aims to analyze publication trends, citation patterns, and developments in research related to parental exposure to cigarette smoke and children’s health, with a specific focus on the themes of parental smoking, pregnancy, and childhood. The research applied a bibliometric analysis method by collecting scientific publication data from relevant international databases. The collected data were analyzed using bibliometric software to identify annual publication trends, frequently occurring keywords, collaboration networks among authors, and the evolution of research topics over time. The findings indicate that studies concerning parental smoking, pregnancy, and child health have increased significantly in recent years. Frequently appearing keywords are associated with cigarette smoke exposure during pregnancy, impacts on child growth and development, and risks of respiratory disorders in children. Furthermore, many studies emphasize the relationship between parental smoking habits and the increased likelihood of chronic diseases in childhood. Overall, research trends demonstrate a growing emphasis on preventing smoke exposure among pregnant women and children to improve long-term child health outcomes.
