Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD) is commonly used to install underground pipelines, particularly for river crossings or in highly populated areas, due to its minimal surface disruption. However, the usual analysis method provided by the Pipeline Research Council Institute (PRCI), which mainly focuses on pipeline safety, is raising concerns about the coating safety. To address this, Finite Element Analysis (FEA) is used alongside the PRCI method. The PRCI method is used to calculate theoretical loads and stresses, and the FEA is used to investigate the stresses in both the pipeline and the coating. The results were then compared to the HDD safety criteria. This combined method ensures the entire installation process’s safety and reliability. This paper presents the applications of this approach to the Kaligarang River crossing in Semarang as a case study. The results show that the safety criteria of the pipeline and the coating are fulfilled during its installation, operation, and hydrostatic testing.
