Abstract

The identification of estrous signs is an important step in livestock reproduction to allow the appropriate mating time. This study investigated soybean oil as a source of vitamin E and its effect on thin-tailed ewes. Observation was performed in one-year-old, non-pregnant thin-tailed ewes with mean weight of ±30 kg. Reproductive factors registered included estrous signs (vulvar color, mucus secretion, vaginal temperature), estrous cycle length, and pregnancy rate. The experiment was conducted using a Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with three treatments and six replications (0 mL, 1.8 mL, 3.6 mL). Before observation, soybean oil was applied for seven days. Data were analyzed using Kruskal–Wallis test for vulvar color and mucus secretion, ANOVA for vaginal temperature and estrous cycle, and descriptive analysis for pregnancy rate. In conclusion, the results indicated a significant effect of soybean oil supplementation on estrous signs (P<0.05), as indicated by a vulvar color score of 2.83±0.40 (red), a vaginal temperature of 38.81±0.29°C, estrous cycle duration of 18.00±0.89 days, and a pregnancy rate of 83.33%. The mucus secretion score was not significantly affected by soybean oil supplementation (P>0.05). Soybean oil at a dose of 1.8 mL clarified estrous signs, shortened estrous cycle, and increased pregnancy rate in thin-tailed ewes.
