Abstract

Low Birth Weight (LBW) remains a global health issue associated with an increased risk of neonatal morbidity and mortality. One strategy for preventing LBW is ensuring adequate micronutrient intake during pregnancy through the consumption of Multiple Micronutrient Supplements (MMS). This study aims to determine the relationship between MMS consumption during pregnancy and infant birth weight at Dr. M.M. Dunda Limboto Regional General Hospital. This study used a quantitative observational analytical design with a retrospective cross-sectional approach. The study population consisted of mothers who gave birth at Dr. M.M. Dunda Limboto Regional General Hospital, with a sample size of 42 respondents selected using purposive sampling. Data were collected from secondary sources, including medical records and the Maternal and Child Health (MCH) Book, and analyzed using the chi-square test. The results showed that the majority of respondents adhered to taking MMS, totaling 25 respondents (59.5%), while 17 respondents (40.5%) did not adhere. Based on birth weight, 28 infants (66.7%) had normal birth weight, and 14 infants (33.3%) were low birth weight (LBW). The results of the Chi-Square test showed a p-value of 0.000 (p<0.05), indicating a significant association between MMS intake and infant birth weight. Pregnant women who adhered to MMS intake were more likely to give birth to infants with normal birth weight compared to those who did not adhere. The conclusion of this study is that there is a significant association between MMS intake during pregnancy and infant birth weight. Adherence to MMS intake needs to be improved through education and routine monitoring during pregnancy.
