PT. Salam Pacific Indonesia Lines (SPIL) Medan Branch is a domestic shipping company that plays a role in supporting inter-island logistics distribution via sea and land routes. This study aims to analyze the implementation and management of the domestic containerization system and to identify operational obstacles and their corresponding solutions. The research employs a field research approach—utilizing observation and interviews—alongside library research. The findings indicate that the containerization system at PT. SPIL Medan Branch is implemented in a structured manner, adhering to Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and regulations governing container depot operations. Management encompasses processes such as container receipt and release, physical condition inspections, arrangement within the Container Yard (CY), and the handling of documentation, including Delivery Orders (D/O), Equipment Interchange Receipts (EIR), and Bills of Lading (B/L). Operational efficiency is bolstered by digital technology through the MySPIL application and the Container Inventory Control (CIC) system, which enable real-time monitoring of container movements. However, operations still face several challenges, including fleet schedule delays, port area congestion, limited availability of empty containers, heavy equipment malfunctions (e.g., reach stackers and forklifts), and weather conditions. Solutions are implemented through periodic fleet planning and maintenance, enhanced accuracy in document verification, and strengthened coordination among the company, shippers, freight forwarders (EMKL), and trucking providers. Overall, technology-driven containerization management enhances the smoothness, security, and quality of domestic cargo shipping services.
