Scabies (mange) is a contagious skin disease of goats caused by the mite Sarcoptes scabiei and can reduce productivity and the value of livestock. Goats are the most numerous ruminant in Banyumas Regency, with 184,734 head in 2022. This review aimed to examine the etiology, risk factors, and control of scabies in goats based on verifiable literature. Studies in Ethiopia reported a mange mite prevalence of about 7.5% in goats (680 animals) and a sarcoptic mange prevalence of 8.8% (979 animals), with higher prevalence in goats in poor body condition and in lowland areas. A systematic review of 18 cross-sectional studies in Ethiopia found higher prevalence in goats and in lowland agro-ecology. Data on goat scabies prevalence in Banyumas Regency were not found in the literature reviewed. Control measures considered include treatment under veterinary supervision, isolation of sick animals, improved housing sanitation, and farmer extension. A survey of prevalence and risk factors in Banyumas Regency is needed.
