Abstract

Household medicine storage practices represent one form of self-medication commonly undertaken by the community as a first response to various health complaints. However, inappropriate medication management may lead to various drug-related problems (DRPs), including irrational drug use, therapeutic duplication, drug interactions, improper storage, and the use of expired medicines. This study aimed to analyze household medicine storage profiles, the distribution of medication types, and potential health risks associated with household medicine use through a cross-sectional approach. This study employed a descriptive cross-sectional design involving quantitative data collection and structured observation. Data were collected through structured interviews and direct inventory of household medicine supplies (home medicine cabinet inventory). Quantitative data were analyzed using frequency distributions, percentages, means, standard deviations, minimum values, and maximum values, while the results of structured observations were used to describe storage conditions and potential risks associated with medication use. The results showed that the mean age of respondents was 42.6 ± 13.5 years, with an age range of 18–74 years. The 30–50-year age group was the largest, comprising 46 respondents (57.5%). The inventory indicated that analgesic-antipyretic medicines and gastrointestinal medicines were the most frequently found medication groups in households. Other medicines identified included NSAIDs, herbal/traditional medicines, cold and flu medicines, cardiovascular medicines, antimicrobials, supplements, and vitamins. Qualitative findings revealed the presence of antibiotics stored without an active prescription, expired medicines, and several liquid preparations stored at inappropriate temperatures. These conditions indicate potential risks associated with self-medication practices and household medicine management. Therefore, improved pharmaceutical education based on DAGUSIBU is needed to enhance community understanding of the proper use, storage, and disposal of medicines.
