Abstract

This study analyzes the effectiveness of the work environment as a driver of employee performance improvement at the South Jakarta Regional Office of the Directorate General of Taxes 1 through a bibliographic literature review. Relevant literature was identified, screened, assessed for eligibility, and synthesized thematically to examine relationships between physical and non-physical work environment conditions and employee performance. The findings indicate that the work environment generally has a positive relationship with employee performance across tax, audit, and public-sector organizations. Adequate workspaces, facilities, technological resources, workplace comfort, interpersonal relationships, communication, managerial support, and organizational culture can support concentration, motivation, coordination, productivity, and professional performance. The synthesis also indicates that the relationship may occur through organizational and psychological mechanisms, including job satisfaction, motivation, communication, organizational commitment, competence, and work stress. Evidence from tax and audit institutions further shows that environmental effectiveness depends on task complexity, professional responsibilities, leadership, and organizational conditions. These findings suggest that work environment improvement should be implemented as an integrated organizational strategy rather than focusing exclusively on physical facilities. In the context of the South Jakarta Regional Office of the Directorate General of Taxes 1, effective environmental management should balance physical resources with supportive social and psychological conditions to sustain accurate, professional, and accountable employee performance. As a literature-based study, the findings provide conceptual implications rather than direct empirical evidence.
