Abstract

Embung (shallow lake) has primary role insupporting various activities in Nusa Tenggara Barat Province mainly in agriculture, livestock and as reserved raw water. Wet season duration is shorter than dry season in thisprovince, therefore embung basically functioned as rain water reservoir in both wet seasonand as reserved raw water in dry season. The aim of this research was to gain basiclimnological characteristics of embung specifically in Lombok Tengah Regency, NusaTenggara Barat (NTB) Province. Samples were taken in April 2012 at six samplingstasions at five embung embung, in 1) Batujai (reservoir), 2) Batujai (nearby floating fishcage/KJA), 3) Dabak (Sengkol), 4) Pengkemit, 5) Cerigi, and 6) Pejanggi. Observedparameter were N-nitrate, N-ammonia, N-nitrite, total nitrogen (TN), ortho-phosphate,total Phosphorous (TP), chlorophyll-a, Total Organic Matter (TOM), water temperature,pH, water conductivity, Total dissolved Solid (TDS), Dissolved Oxygen (DO), DOsaturation, turbidity, and Secchi depth. Results shows that embungs were prone to havehigh aquatics productivity based on its nitrogenous and phosphorous contents as well aschlorophyll-a. The concentrations of total organic matter and TDS were high whileturbidity in embung Pejanggi was very high. Abundance, number of species and diversityindices of phytoplankton were low, while the abundance of zoobenthos was high. Keywords: embung, limnological characteristics, Nusa Tenggara Barat
