Abstract

Habitat fragmentation represents a major threat to Sumatran tigers Panthera tigris sumatrae by reducing habitat connectivity and potentially restricting movement across increasingly modified landscapes. This study aimed to model the effects of habitat fragmentation on tiger movement patterns and spatial distribution using advanced GPS telemetry integrated with spatial analysis. GPS collars were used to record tiger locations and movement trajectories, while Geographic Information System GIS analysis and the Minimum Convex Polygon MCP method were applied to characterize habitat conditions and estimate home ranges. Spatial distribution modeling was subsequently used to evaluate tiger occurrence in relation to habitat characteristics and landscape connectivity. The results showed that increasing habitat fragmentation was associated with smaller observed home ranges and shorter daily movements. Tiger locations and predicted occurrence were concentrated primarily in larger connected forest patches whereas isolated habitats and anthropogenically modified areas showed lower suitability and restricted movement. Potential movement corridors were also identified between important habitat patches. These findings demonstrate the importance of maintaining functional landscape connectivity for Sumatran tiger conservation. Protecting core habitats preserving movement corridors and restoring connections between fragmented forest patches are therefore essential for supporting the long term persistence of this threatened subspecies.
