Abstract

Skin injuries caused by trauma represent an important concern in racehorses because they may interfere with tissue integrity, recovery, welfare, and athletic performance. This study aimed to evaluate the efficiency of fibroblast cell culture biotechnology as an in vitro approach for supporting skin tissue regeneration in racehorses (Equus ferus caballus) following traumatic injury. Fibroblasts were isolated from equine skin biopsy samples and maintained under controlled culture conditions. Cellular viability and proliferative activity were evaluated using the MTT assay, while regenerative characteristics were assessed through microscopic and histological evaluation of fibroblast density, cellular organization, and extracellular matrix deposition. Comparative evaluation was conducted between control and treatment groups. The findings showed that equine skin fibroblasts could be successfully isolated and expanded in vitro. The treatment condition demonstrated greater metabolic activity, fibroblast density, extracellular matrix deposition, and cellular organization than the control condition, indicating stronger regeneration-associated cellular responses. These findings suggest that fibroblast cell culture provides a promising experimental platform for studying equine skin regeneration. However, further research using standardized treatment protocols, three-dimensional skin models, and in vivo validation is required before this approach can be translated into clinical management of traumatic skin injuries in racehorses.
