The characteristics of Generation Z students, who have grown up in the digital era, influence their preferences for housing, including boarding houses. The design of boarding house buildings plays a significant role not only in fulfilling residential needs but also in enhancing students' comfort, learning productivity, and psychological well-being. Meanwhile, the advancement of Artificial Intelligence (AI) has created opportunities to accelerate the design visualization process by generating various design alternatives tailored to users' needs. This study aims to develop an AI-based boarding house design engineering model that aligns with the preferences of Generation Z students at Universitas Negeri Malang. The research employs a Research and Development (R&D) approach integrated with User-Centred Design (UCD). The preferences of Generation Z students are analyzed to formulate design concepts, spatial programs, and design criteria, which are subsequently translated into AI prompts to generate visualizations of boarding house design models. The findings present a design engineering model that integrates student preferences, boarding house planning standards, and AI technology to produce designs that satisfy functional, aesthetic, and technological requirements. The resulting model demonstrates that AI can effectively support the design exploration process by making it faster, more adaptive, and more user-oriented. This study is expected to serve as a reference for developing boarding house designs that are more responsive to the characteristics of Generation Z while promoting the application of AI in architectural design processes.
