Abstract

This study examines income differences among souvenir traders in Teras Malioboro 1 and 2 following the relocation of street vendors from Malioboro’s pedestrian corridor. Using primary survey data from 331 traders collected in 2025, we estimate log-monthly self-reported business income using ordinary least squares with HC3 heteroskedasticity-consistent standard errors, complemented by quantile regression. Business tenure, trading hours, and workforce size are positively associated with income after controlling for demographic characteristics. One additional year of business tenure is associated with a 1.01 percent higher monthly income, one additional trading hour per day with a 3.25 percent higher income, and one additional worker with an 8.72 percent higher income. These results remain stable across alternative education coding, additional business controls, and sample sensitivity checks. Quantile point estimates for trading hours and workforce size are larger at lower conditional income quantiles, although formal Wald tests do not reject equality of the coefficients across quantiles. For workforce size, the corresponding associations are 9.70 percent at the 25th quantile, 7.25 percent at the median, and 6.18 percent at the 75th quantile. The study shifts attention from average relocation effects to post-relocation income differences within the same managed commercial environment. Because the data are cross-sectional, purposively sampled, self-reported, and lack stall-level location measures, the estimates should be interpreted as conditional associations rather than causal effects. The findings point to the potential value of improving visitor circulation, peak-period coordination, and traders’ operational capabilities.
