Abstract

Wingbeat frequency is an important parameter in insect flight mechanisms and is influenced by morphological characteristics, particularly body mass and wing surface area. This study aims to provide a preliminary overview of wingbeat frequency in four insect species (rhinoceros beetle, dragonfly, butterfly, and moth) using a mathematical approach based on morphological parameters. The research employed a quantitative experimental method in which body mass was measured with an analytical balance, and wing surface area was calculated from length and width measurements taken with a caliper. These parameters were incorporated into a mathematical model, using Rashevsky’s experimental constant (k = 65), to estimate the frequency. The results showed differences in wingbeat frequency values: 22,39 Hz for the rhinoceros beetle, 14,17 Hz for the dragonfly, 12,25 Hz for the moth, and 2,16 Hz for the butterfly. In general, insects with larger body mass and wider wings tended to exhibit lower wingbeat frequencies, whereas insects with smaller body mass and relatively narrower wings showed higher frequencies. This study provides basic information on the relationship between morphological characteristics and wingbeat frequency in insects through a mathematical approach.
