Abstract

Meaning in life provides individuals with a sense of significance by encompassing elements that confer special meaning and serve as life goals. In reality, some individuals may fail to find meaning in life—one such group is family caregivers of people with mental illness (PWMI). This study aimed to describe meaning in life among family caregivers of PWMI. Three informants participated: two were mothers of the PWMI in their care and one was a cousin. A qualitative methodology with a phenomenological approach was employed. Data were collected using semi-structured interviews, observation, and documentation. The findings indicate that manifestations of meaning in life included: a clear sense of meaning and purpose, religious practice and devotion to God, awareness of the relationship between caregiver and care recipient, attitudes in responding to experienced burdens, the discovery of meanings within the caregiver role, optimism, life satisfaction and happiness, and preparedness for death. Factors influencing meaning in life among these family caregivers included the deepening of personal values, religiosity, and self-concept. Keywords: Meaning in Life, Family Caregiver, People with Mental Illness.
