Dyslipidemia is common in type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), but it is unclear whether there is any association between circulating levels of lipase activity and glycemic or lipid parameters. To characterize age, sex and random blood glucose (RBG) in an archived dataset of T2DM and investigate RBG, triglycerides, total cholesterol, and serum lipase in a smaller biochemical data sub-set. This secondary exploratory analysis included 100 records of which age, sex, and RBG (Stage 1); and 20 records with complete age, sex, RBG, triglyceride, total-cholesterol, and lipase (Stage 2). Documentation was not available that Stage 2 participants were a random or nested sample of Stage 1, so the components were analyzed separately. Two-sided Mann Whitney U tests were used for sex comparisons, and Spearman correlation for associations. In Stage 1, mean age was 57.9±11.7 years and mean RBG was 213.8±44.1 mg/dL. Age was not associated with RBG (rho=0.025, p=0.807). In Stage 2, mean RBG, triglycerides, total cholesterol, and lipase were 254.1±50.4 mg/dL, 194.9±52.3 mg/dL, 193.7±58.2 mg/dL, and 129.4±36.0 U/mL, respectively. There was a positive correlation between triglycerides and total cholesterol (rho=0.678, p=0.001), while lipase was not significantly correlated with RBG or either of the lipid parameters. The data demonstrate both glycemic and lipid abnormalities, but fail to prove a relationship between serum lipase and metabolic parameters. The results presented are preliminary and need to be validated on a cohort with a prospective characterization.
