Abstract

This article investigates the presence and patterns of media bias in BBC News Indonesia’s coverage of the September 2025 mass poisoning linked to the Free Nutritious Meal (Makan Bergizi Gratis, MBG) program. By conducting a qualitative framing analysis of Entman's model (defining the problems, diagnosing the cause, making moral judgments, and recommending a treatment) on three BBC News Indonesia articles, the study identifies systematic uses of source selection bias, labeling and word choice, and picture selection bias. The findings show that BBC News Indonesia framed the crisis as a structural government failure by prioritizing critical civil society voices and using emotionally evocative visuals of victims. While these findings suggest a non-neutral narrative, the author acknowledges that they also serve a watchdog role by demanding institutional accountability during a public health emergency. Ultimately, the text illustrates how BBC News Indonesia can shape public perception of state policy through strategic editorial curation. This study helps establish a framework for future research to distinguish between harmful biases (distorting the fact) and informative biases.
