Abstract

Abstract Hyperuricemia, a condition of high blood uric acid, is a trigger for gout and kidney disorders. Conventional treatments such as allopurinol carry the risk of serious side effects. This study evaluates the potential of ethanol extract of chayote fruit (Sechium edule Sw.) EESE) as a therapeutic alternative. The study used male mice induced with potassium oxonate to induce hyperuricemia. The test animals were divided into normal, negative, positive (allopurinol), and two groups receiving EESE doses of 200 and 400 mg/kgBW. The results showed that EESE administration, especially at a dose of 400 mg/kgBW, significantly reduced serum uric acid levels. Its effectiveness was equivalent to that of allopurinol. Biochemical analysis revealed that this extract inhibited xanthine oxidase enzyme activity in the liver by up to 47.3%. Flavonoids such as apigenin are thought to be responsible for this inhibitory mechanism. In addition, kidney tissue examination noted improvement in damaged tubule structure in the treatment group. It can be concluded that ethanol extract of chayote fruit has strong antihyperuricemic activity. It works through a dual mechanism: suppressing uric acid production and protecting the kidneys from damage. These findings open up opportunities for the development of chayote as a safe and efficient herbal medicine for the management of gout.
