Abstract

Cervical Cancer is one of the most common cancers among women and a leading cause of cancer-related mortality in developing countries. This is largely due to low uptake of early detection and delayed diagnosis. This study aimed to collect and analyze scientific evidence on sociocultural factors influencing cervical cancer screening in developing countries. These factors include cultural beliefs and values toward healthcare services, stigma, embarrassment, and taboos, knowledge or health literacy, social support, and religion and religious interpretations in the cervical cancer screening process. This study employed a scoping review method based on the Arksey and O’Malley framework and the Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) guidance, with reporting guided by the PRISMA-ScR checklist. Literature searches were conducted in PubMed, ScienceDirect, Wiley, and Google Scholar for publications from 2020 to 2025, yielding 12 articles that met the inclusion criteria. The findings indicate that cultural beliefs and values, stigma, embarrassment, and taboos, knowledge or health literacy, social support, and religion and religious interpretations significantly influence cervical cancer screening uptake. In conclusion, sociocultural factors play an important role in women’s decisions to participate in cervical cancer screening. Therefore, culturally sensitive health education and screening interventions are needed, involving husband or family support as well as the engagement of community leaders and religious figures to improve Participation in cervical cancer screening.
