Abstract

Visual arts education develops technical and creative capacity, but its contribution to economically productive and ethically grounded entrepreneurship remains underexamined. This exploratory case study investigates how structured watercolour studio pedagogy may develop creative human capital and how one student trajectory illustrates the movement from medium exploration to market positioning, paid commissions, and professional digital illustration. The bounded case involved 28 Graphic Design students and two lecturers. The three-credit Semester 2 watercolour unit was conducted in two class meetings in April 2024. Data comprised studio observation, response frequencies, artwork analysis, and follow-up interviews conducted in August 2024 with Volvolita Hanrik, a member of the original cohort, and Clay, a supplementary informant outside the cohort. Seventeen students (60.7%) reported that the demonstration-guided practice-repetition sequence made watercolour easier to practise, four (14.3%) reported continuing difficulty, and seven (25.0%) did not respond. Volvolita's 2024 A5 watercolour illustration had a stated price of IDR 200,000-250,000, while her 2026 gouache painting of the original character Rion VHK reportedly attracted offers of IDR 500,000-2,000,000. Reported commission prices started at IDR 50,000 for A5 paper-based illustrations and varied according to composition type, visual complexity, size, and medium. The follow-up interviews recorded an average one-week deadline, alternative concept sketches, up to three revision rounds, transfer payment, and client ownership of commissioned outputs as understood by the participant. Consent was obtained for the use of interview data, student artworks, and classroom documentation, while client identity remained anonymised. These findings support a cautious studio-to-enterprise pathway linking technical mastery, creative differentiation, market recognition, and ethical enterprise. The paper proposes a Sharia-oriented framework centred on amanah, itqan, justice, public benefit, intellectual-property responsibility, and resource stewardship.
