<![CDATA[Water loss in open channels is one of the problems that can affect the efficiency of water distribution. The use of a sluice gate as a flow control structure can cause changes in flow characteristics and discharge along the channel. This study aims to determine the flow characteristics in an open channel using a sluice gate and to analyze the effect of gate opening variations on water loss. The study was conducted experimentally using a 6 m long flume at the Hydraulics Laboratory of the Civil Engineering Study Program, Universitas Bina Darma. The gate opening variations were 1 cm, 1.5 cm, and 2 cm, representing 25%, 50%, and 75% openings, respectively. The measured parameters included discharge, flow velocity, water depth, Reynolds number, and Froude number. Water loss was analyzed based on the difference between the inlet and outlet discharge. The results showed that the inlet discharges were 1.050 m³/s, 1.230 m³/s, and 1.210 m³/s, while the outlet discharges were 0.028 m³/s, 0.041 m³/s, and 0.047 m³/s, respectively. Based on the difference between the inlet and outlet discharge, the water losses were 1.022 m³/s, 1.189 m³/s, and 1.163 m³/s, respectively. The Reynolds number analysis indicated that the flow before and after the sluice gate was turbulent, while the Froude number analysis indicated that the flow remained supercritical. Thus, variations in sluice gate opening resulted in differences in discharge and water loss under the tested flow conditions.]]>
