Abstract

This study explores the dynamics of tazkiyatun nafs (purification of the soul) as a religious coping mechanism among Millennial and Generation Z Muslim women in the digital disruption era. While Millennials typically utilize structured cognitive platforms like majelis taklim, Gen Z leans toward affective and formless digital spiritual ecosystems. Using a qualitative phenomenological approach, data were collected through in-depth interviews with five informants experiencing psychosocial crises such as quarter-life crisis and parenting burnout. The findings reveal a dialectic of psychosocial crises: Gen Z faces anticipatory anxiety regarding the future, whereas Millennials experience actual role-strain in domestic domains. To cope, both generations implement tazkiyatun nafs through takhalli (emptying negative emotions via dhikr and istighfar) and tahalli (internalizing positive traits through prayer and discipline). An epistemological contrast exists in validating religious knowledge, with Millennials relying on physical religious figures and Gen Z relying on digital content while attempting independent verification. In conclusion, tazkiyatun nafs serves as a functional coping mechanism across generations, despite differences in media preferences. Contribution: This research provides preliminary insights into comparative intergenerational religious coping, offering a foundation for developing differential and empathetic religious coaching strategies.
