Abstract

The phenomenon of "barcode" has emerged among adolescents, involving self-inflicted linear cuts on the arm, forming a pattern resembling a barcode. Barcode behavior is a form of non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI). This study aims to explore the psychological dynamics of adolescents who have ceased engaging in NSSI barcode. The participants of this research were two junior high school female students who had stopped performing NSSI barcode. Data were collected through in-depth interviews and analyzed using a case study approach. The results revealed that involvement in NSSI was triggered by emotional distress, such as confusion, sadness, anger, and feelings of helplessness. Barcode behavior was used as a temporary coping mechanism to alleviate emotional pain. The cessation process involved awareness of the negative impacts of NSSI, internal motivation to change, and social support from the surrounding environment. After stopping, participants reported feeling happier, more confident, and focused on positive activities. Adolescents involved in NSSI were described through the R.I.S.E. of Phoenix framework, encompassing the phases of ruining, impassing, separating, and emerging. Participant AL experienced all four phases, while participant JM went through three phases: ruining, impassing, and emerging.
