Abstract

This study examines the practice of muzāra'ah (crop-sharing) and its economic implications for tenant farmers in Semanten Village, Pacitan Regency. The research focuses on the factors driving land management partnerships, the patterns of harvest sharing, and the opportunities and limitations regarding economic benefits for the tenant farmers. A qualitative field research approach was employed. Data were gathered through observation, interviews with landowners and tenant farmers, and documentation, and then analyzed descriptively through examination, categorization, verification, interpretation, and conclusion drawing. The findings indicate that muzāra'ah partnerships arise when landowners are unable to manage their land personally due to busy schedules, other employment, limited capacity, or advanced age. Harvest-sharing patterns vary—ranging from an equal split to a one-third/two-thirds division—based on the agreement reached by the parties involved. For tenant farmers, this partnership provides access to land and the opportunity to earn a share of the harvest. The study also notes that some tenant farmers were subsequently able to acquire their own land. However, the extent of the economic impact remains contingent on harvest yields, production costs, each party's contributions, and the agreed-upon sharing ratio. Therefore, the implementation of muzāra'ah requires clear agreements, transparent harvest sharing, and open dialogue regarding costs and business risks.
