Abstract

The domestic demand for carbon black (CB) in Indonesia continues to rise, driven by the expanding manufacturing sector, yet limited local production capacity has resulted in a significant import dependency, amounting to 124,805 tons in 2024. This study aims to analyze and select the most optimal CB production process for application in a new plant design in Indonesia through a systematic literature review. A comparative analysis was conducted on the three major CB technologies Channel Black, Furnace Black, and Thermal Black based on key parameters like product yield, operational continuity, and economic viability. The review identifies the Furnace Black Process as the superior technological choice, primarily due to its highest reported yield (30–65%), continuous operational stability, and significant global market share (exceeding 95% of world production). Preliminary stoichiometric economic analysis further supports its viability, demonstrating a strong raw material cost to sales revenue ratio of 1:2.1. While the process generates CO2 emissions, advanced emission control technologies are available, allowing for the tail gas to be repurposed as an energy source. Therefore, the implementation of the Furnace Black Process is strongly recommended to support national industrial self-sufficiency and reduce Indonesia's reliance on carbon black imports.
