General Background Industrial power systems rely heavily on distribution transformers to bridge energy sources and operational loads effectively. Specific Background This study examines the implementation of protection and maintenance systems on the TR 5-2 distribution transformer at PT Petrokimia Gresik to safeguard operational reliability and process continuity. Knowledge Gap Although transformers are vital, potential electrical, thermal, and mechanical disturbances that threaten uninterrupted production activities require continuous evaluation. Aims This research aims to evaluate the coordinated protection configuration and preventive maintenance protocols applied to the industrial transformer. Results Findings indicate that the transformer utilizes a comprehensive, layered protection scheme—including Buchholz relay, OTI, WTI, GFR, SPR, OCR, and OLR—complemented by routine preventive maintenance such as oil level monitoring and component servicing. Novelty This work provides a field-based empirical assessment of layered safety mechanisms and upkeep procedures for step-down distribution transformers within large-scale chemical manufacturing. Implications Systematic coordination between multi-layer protection and scheduled maintenance successfully preserves operational performance and prevents premature industrial downtime. Key Findings Highlights The distribution transformer is equipped with a comprehensive seven-layer protection scheme to mitigate thermal, electrical, and mechanical faults, Preventive maintenance practices such as routine inspections and oil level checks effectively sustain operational integrity, Coordinated relay configurations successfully isolate internal and external anomalies without disrupting healthy system components.
