Abstract

Research on violence in literary works has developed through various approaches, but the relationships among the forms, causal factors, and impacts of violence against children within families still require further examination. This study aimed to describe the forms, causal factors, and impacts of domestic violence (DV) represented in the novel Rumah untuk Alie by Lenn Liu. The study employed a descriptive qualitative approach with a textual analysis design from the perspective of the sociology of literature. Data comprising narratives, dialogue, and depictions of characters’ actions were collected using reading and note-taking techniques and subsequently analyzed through identification, classification, interpretation, and conclusion drawing. The analysis identified two forms of DV: physical violence (16 data items) and psychological violence (19 data items). The violence represented was associated with individual, social, environmental, and family history factors. Its impacts on the character Alie included pain, physical injuries, a tendency to withdraw, frustration, despair, and fear. These findings indicate that the representation of DV in the novel highlights children’s vulnerability within family power relations. This study contributes to research in the sociology of literature by clarifying the relationships among forms of violence, their underlying factors, and their impacts on the child character. The implications underscore the importance of the family as a space for protecting children and respecting their dignity, while also providing a basis for comparative research on representations of violence in contemporary Indonesian literature.
