This study aims to determine the effect of farmer participation, the role of facilitators, the role of government on social forestry performance, the role of farmer group performance in mediating the effect of farmer participation, the role of facilitators, and the role of government on social forestry. This research uses a mixed-method approach that combines quantitative and qualitative research. The research instrument used was a questionnaire compiled with a five-point Likert scale. The sample size was 198 respondents (farmer groups holding social forestry permits, facilitators, and the Walanae Forest Management Unit). Data were analyzed using the SEM-PLS method (Smart PLS software version 3.0). The results showed that farmer participation and the role of facilitators had a positive and significant effect on the performance of farmer groups and social forestry. Directly, the role of government did not have a significant effect on the performance of farmer groups, but had a positive and significant effect on the performance of social forestry. There is a tendency for the role of government to be influential through other mechanisms. The performance of farmer groups can mediate the participation of farmers, the role of facilitators, and the role of government in improving the performance of social forestry. The benefits of this research not only contribute to improving the performance of social forestry, but also to the development of more inclusive, sustainable, and community-based forest management, so it is expected to be used as a recommendation for parties in efforts to improve the performance of social forestry.
