NEEDS ANALYSIS OF ENGLISH FOR NURSE FOR BULUKUMBA NURSING ACADEMY STUDENTS

Abstract

BAHASA Inggris di perguruan tinggi diajarkan sebagai mata kuliah umum padajurusan nonbahasa Inggris, seperti halnya di Akper Bulukumba. Idealnya, materiyang diajarkan harus disesuaikan dengan jurusannya atau dikenal dengan istilahESP (English for Specific Purpose). Persepsi dari beberapa pihak yang adakaitannya dengan Akper Bulukumba dibutuhkan untuk mengetahui sejauh manapentingnya bahasa Inggris untuk karier sebagai perawat dan materi yang tepatsesuai kebutuhan mereka. Tujuan dari tulisan ini adalah untuk mendeskripsikanpersepsi mahasiswa, alumni, dosen dan pengguna lulusan terhadap perananbahasa Inggris di Akper Bulukumba, dan mendesain silabus bahasa Inggris bagimahasiswa Akper Bulukumba. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode analisisdeskriptif dengan subjek mahasiswa Akper semester 6, alumni yang bekerja dirumah sakit Andi Sultan Dg. Raja Bulukumba, rumah sakit di luar negeri, dosenbahasa Inggris, dan pengguna lulusan, yang total berjumlah 52 orang denganmenggunakan metode purposive sampling. Pengumpulan data dilakukan denganmendistribusikan kuesioner untuk mengidentifikasi kebutuhan dan tujuanmahasiswa dalam memilih jurusan keperawatan. Data dianalisis denganmenggunakan statistik deskriptif. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa padaumumnya responden meyakini bahasa Inggris sangat penting untuk diajarkandi Akper Bulukumba. Bahasa Inggris diajarkan sebagai mata kuliah umum, tetapimahasiswa mengharapkan materi yang relevan dengan tugas mereka di tempatkerja, untuk itu pengajar harus mendesain materi dan metode mengajar yangmemotivasi mahasiswa. Silabus yang sesuai bagi mahasiswa Akper Bulukumbaadalah silabus topikal yang disusun berdasarkan topik atau tema. Topik yangsesuai terdiri atas materi khusus, materi umum, dan materi yang disarankan. AbstractENGLISH in university is given as General English Subject for non-English students atBulukumba Nursing Academy. Ideally, the teaching material should be adjusted to themajor called English for Specific Purpose. Perceptions from some related parties areneeded to measure the importance of English for the nurse's carrier and the suitablematerial based on their needs. The objectives of this writing were to describe theperceptions of the students, graduates, lecturers and stakeholders on the role of studyingEnglish at Bulukumba Nursing Academy, and to design syllabus of English for studentsof Bulukumba Nursing Academy. This research used descriptive method. Theparticipants of the research were the sixth semester students of Bulukumba NursingAcademy, the graduates, English lecturers, and stakeholder. The total participant ofthis research was 52 participants which were selected based on purposive samplingtechniques. The collection of the data was done by distributing the questionnaires tothe participants to identify the students' needs to attend the Nursing Department. Thedata were analyzed by applying descriptive statistics. The findings of the researchindicated that most participants believed that English is very important to be taught atNursing Academy Bulukumba. English is taught as general course but the studentsexpect more relevant materials to their task in the clinical practice or work place, thatis why the lecturer must design the material and teaching method to motivate thestudents. The appropriate syllabus for nursing students at Bulukumba Nursing Academyis the topical syllabus which is organized by the topics or themes. The suitable topicsconsist of content-subjects, general subjects and suggested subjects..
