Abstract

ABSTRACT   Language is one of the characteristics of human beings that differentiate them from other creatures. In this case, human beings use language as a tool of communication. In uttering something, people are not only sounding sentence, but also transferring it into behavior. This is called speech acts, and illocutionary act is one of the aspects of it. This study focuses on one of the categories of illocutionary act, conflictive act that is used in the film The Chronicles of Narnia, the Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe by C.S. Lewis. In collecting the data, the writer elicits the data through the conversation among the characters in the film. To analyze the data the writer uses Leech’s theory. Leech divided conflictive act into four kinds which is are threatening, reprimanding, accusing and cursing. It is hoped that one kind of conflictive act that is not found in this research which is cursing, can be found in other research. However, it is suggested for researchers to use another theory of illocutionary acts in other objects such as native language, novel, short story and many others.   Keywords: Speech act; Illocutionary act; Conflictive act; Film : The Chronicles of Narnia, the Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe.

Abstract

Abstract The problems of this research is how does Ibsen connect the idea, behavior and material culture in A Doll’s House, and the objective of this research is to recognize the ways Ibsen connect the idea, behavior, and material culture in A Doll’s House. Then the writer using three steps in terms of methodology. They are preparation, data collection and analysis.

Abstract

ABSTRACT This research entitled “An Error Analysis of Prepositions in Descriptive Texts Made by Students of Madrasah Aliyah Nurul Huda Dowora in Tidore” is an attempt to classify, analyze and descripe the errors in the use of prepositions in descriptive texts. It was carried out at Madrasah Aliyah Nurul Huda Dowora in Tidore. The method used in this research is descriptive. Aarts and Aarts’ (1982) concept is used to explain the types of prepositions. To find out the kinds of error in  prepositions made by the students. Jha (1991) theory is used to explain the types errors in prepositiosn made by the students.. The data of the research were taken from the students’ writing assignment.          The results of this research show that there are three kinds of preposition errors made by the students. First, the omission of preposition-the students drop a preposition in a sentence where it is obligatory. Second, the insertion of preposition-the students add a preposition in a sentence where it is not necessary. Third, the selection of incorrect preposition ed in a sentence.     Keyword : Error analysis, prepositions, omission, insertion, selection.

Abstract

ABSTRACT This research entitled “Cohesive Feature in short story ‘RobohnyaSurau kami’ by A.A. Navis”. Discourse analysis is used in this research. The aim of this research is to describe and verbal grammar cohesive feature that emerge in the short story. This research is expected to help students or readers in understanding the using cohesive feature in short story. In this research, the writer uses Tarigan’s  theory  (1987). The data have been collected  from the sentences which contain lexical and grammatical features of the short story. The method that use in this research is descriptive through content analysis. The result shows that there are many cohesive feature use in that short story. The most lexical cohesive feature used was Repetition, Synonym, antonym, Collocation, and  Equivalency.  While the grammatical cohesive feature are pronominal, substitution, ellipse, and conjunction.   Keywords: Lexical and grammatical features, descriptive, short story ‘RobohnyaSurauKami’  by A.A. Abstract

ABSTRACT This skripsi entitled ?Dimensi Identitas Penulis Irlandia Bernama John Millington Synge? aims at discussing the identity dimensions John Millington Synge has. In analyzing, a theory on identity dimensions by Wallace, Levy Strauss, and Miller in Honigmann Handbook is applied. In this theory, the identity dimensions compriseNationality, Education, Ecology, and aspects of  Literature dimensions. In data analysis, ?a content analysis? is applied andthen classified in to the above mentioned four dimensions. The collected data is analyzed descriptively using both approaches, extrinsically, and intrinsically. Extrinsically, the focus is on the concepts of anthropology namely identity. Intrinsically, the attention falls on the aspects of literature namely plot, character, setting, theme, and point of view. The findings show that John Millington Synge is evidently covers four dimensions in his life either individually or personally.   Keywords: Identity, Dimensions, Individual, Personal

Abstract

ABSTRACTS Pragmatics is the study of the relations between language and context that are basic to an account of language understanding. The single mostobviousway in which the relationshipbetween languageand contextis reflectedin the structures ofthe languages​​themselves, is through the phenomenon ofdeixis.The objective of this research are to identify the types of deixis and to analyse the usage of deixis in the film. The method used in this research is descriptive method. The identification and analysing data describe descriptively. In analysing data the theory of Levinson is used. He categorized deixis  into five types, those are person deixis, place deixis, time deixis, discourse deixis, and social deixis. Levinson also distinguishes two kinds of deixis usages, namely gestural and symbolic usage. The result shows  that there are five types of deixis in the film Braveheart, those are person deixis, place deixis, time deixis, discourse deixis, and social deixis, wheares the usage of deixis found in the film are symbolic and gestural usage. Abstract

ABSTRACT   This research entitled “Prepositions in the Lyrics of  Metropolis Album by Dream Theater” is written to analyze and classify the form and the meaning of the prepositions that are used in that album. A preposition is a word that connects a noun or pronoun with a verb, adjective, or another noun or pronoun by indicating a relationship between the things for which they stand. The problems of this research are focused on what are the form and the meaning of prepositions that are found in the lyrics of Metropolis Album? The method used in this research is descriptive. The data of prepositions in this research were collected from the lyrics of  Metropolis Album Part I and Part II by Dream Theater. The data of the prepositions found in the album are given number and wrote in the small cards. The result of this research shows that The Writer of the lyrics in this album used many prepositions to express meaning through the lyrics of his songs. The research used Quirk (1985) concept in analyzing the form of prepositions, whereas Curme (1986) concept is used in analyzing the meaning of prepositions found in the lyrics of the songs in the Metropolis Album. Abstract

ABSTRACT DOLFINA GALELA. The Role of English Language In the Tourism Industry at Tobelo. (Supervised by Drs. Fentje Kodong, MA, Arter J. Senduk, SS, M. Hum). Tourism sector has a good prospect in the future, because it can  give big foreign exchange for developing tourism sector. Developing tourism sector needs several factors of human resources, one of them is the communications factors in which language as a means of verbal communication plays an important role. The functions of language and such ast o develop  science and technology. And to communicate with other country. The people who are involved in the tourism industry are required to communicate with the tourists in their language. The language which is often used to communicate with the foreign tourist is English. If they cannot understand the English language, the foreign tourist will often find difficulties in communication. The problem are :What are the roles of English tourism in Tobelo? The hypothesis is that the role of the English language and the ability of a person in using the English language is important in the tourism industry. The objectives of this investigation are to undserstand The Role of English Language In the Tourism Industry at Tobelo ; to understand to ability of the English language of a person in tourism industry so far; to understand the hindrances in the tourism industry in using the English language, the writer uses the tabulation method to analyse the data into the table form and to interpret the table. Based on the investigation result, according to the informants that the role of the English language is important to support the communication and their services to the foreign tourists. According to the tourists, the ability of the English language of a person in the tourism industry is enough.  The persons who includes in the tourism industry has the hindrances in using the English language, for example, the speed of speaking, pronunciation of tourists. They used several ways to handle these hindrances, such as they used to interrupt if they do not understand about the meaning, they use dictionary and gestures to handle these hindrances.   -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Keywords : Role, English, Tourism, Tobelo, Industry
