Abstract

The skripsi which is entitled “Pesan-Pesan Moral dalam Cerita Pendek Young Goodman Brown dan Rappaccini’s Daughter Karya Nathaniel Hawthorne,” aims at identifying, analyzing and describing the moral messages through the character, setting and plot. The data had been collected by focusing on the character, setting and plot as the elements of prose which reveal the moral messages within Young Goodman Brown and Rappaccini’s Daughter. In identifying the character, the writer uses theory of Roberts concerning character as the representation of human being. The writer also uses theory of Stanton to identify setting as the place or situation of the story and plot as the whole sequence of the story. In order to analyze the moral messages within Young Goodman Brown and Rappaccini’s Daughter, the writer uses theory of Sidney about the purposes of literature which are to educate and entertain the readers. The findings of this research show that literary works have the moral messages which are portrayed by the intrinsic elements of the short stories and those show the didactic and entertaining functions of literature. The moral messages in Young Goodman Brown are: the housewife’s power of love in marriage, choice of life determines the future and human should have the consistency in making a decission. Rappaccini’s Daughter also has three moral messages, those are: the children are not their parents medium of exploitation, physical appearance does not always reflect human’s behaviour and sincerity of love makes everything good. Abstract

This skripsi is entitled “Realita Kehidupan yang Tercermin lewat Latar dalam Drama Riders to the Sea Karya Synge” The objective of this research is to analyze the play in terms of setting using intrinsic and extrinsic approaches. This research is based on Aristotle theory “mimetic theory”, and Walek and Warren’s theory on literature and society. Literature and society are two parts that cannot be separated, both of them have connection with each other. Many of literary works including plays were born from society, so we can see that society has its own part to contribute to literature. In some of literary works we can see the story imitated from the real world. Riders to the Sea is one of the plays which was based on the reality. The playwright John Milington Synge, wrote this play where he visited the Aran islands. In Aran islands he heard a tragedy that happened to one of families there. By that experience, he decided to write play describing the fact that he heard. Based on the analyzing of the setting, this research concludes that there are 5 elements of setting that reflect the social reality of Irish people especially people on Aran  islands. Abstract

ABSTRACT All regions in Indonesia have a diversity of traditions that enrich the culture. It is also found in the sub-ethnic groups in the district Bolango Bolaang South Mongondow. One is a dangisa dance which is kind of a war dance. The poem of dangisa dance contains the cultural values ​​implicit in expressions. But the lack of public will culturally meaningful expressions in poetry led to cultural values ​​contained in it is no longer applied in social life. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to identify and explain those phrases and then find cultural meaning contained in the poem dangisa dance. The method used in this research is descriptive-qualitative method. To gather data, researchers conducted a study of the documents, and observations and interviews using interview techniques recommended Spradley (1997). The observations are then translated into engineering Etnography of Speaking by Hymes (1974). Identify and describe forms of lingual units, data were analyzed using linguistic theory proposed by Chaer (2007) and Djajasudarma (2009). Then, to find the meaning behind the cultural expressions that are used in poetry linguistic anthropological theory proposed by Foley (1997). The results showed that in poetry there dangisa dance-language expressions in the form of words, phrases, clauses, and sentences have meaning and significance in the form of broad, cognitive meaning, connotative meaning, idiomatic meaning, and emotive meaning. Cultural meaning in poetry is classified into 5 meaningful cultural expression. From the results of the research and the discussion concluded that the poem dance dangisa are speaking Bolango meaningful cultural expressions containing noble values. Abstract

The study entitled “Affixation in the Album Up All Night by One Direction”. This study emphasizes the inflectional affixes and the derivational affixes in the lyrics of that album Up All Night. The method of this investigation is descriptive in the data are collected, analyzed using the method suggested by Nida and O’Grady and Dobrovolsky. Theoretically, this study is intended to contribution to the linguistics on morphology. Practically, this study helps the students or readers to know more the kinds of affixation on the album Up All Night so that they can understand. The result of this research shows that the inflectional affixes are plural {-s} and possessive {-‘s}, inflected to verbs: third person singular nouns-pas {-es}, present progressive {-ing}, past tense {-ed} and past participle {-en/ed} and inflected to adjectives: comparative {-er} and superlative {-est}. The derivational affixes are which consist of prefixes and suffixes. The prefixes are {in-}, {re-}, {im-}, and {super-}. While the suffixes are {-ly}, {-ful}, {-ing}, {-ed}, {-less}, {-ish}, {-ize}, {-ment} and each of them has their own function and meaning. Abstract

Poetry is the oldest form of literary genres. It can be based on life experiences. Mystique is one life experience that can be expressed in a poem. It is important for the readers to understand how a poet uses words, how a poet puts fresh vigors and new meanings into words. Metaphor is one of the poet's ways of using words to give pleasure to the readers. Edgar Allan Poe is an American Poet who used a lot of metaphors in his mystique poems. So, the aims of this research are to analyze the uses of metaphor and to interprete the meaning of metaphor in his mystique poems. All the data were collected using literature research methods that have relations to the object of research. The writer used intrinsic approach to analyze these poems and to show the use of metaphor in Edgar's mystique poems. The result of this study shows that Edgar uses a lot of metaphor in his poems. Abstract

This skripsi entitled Substitution in the short story “The Garden Party” by Katherine Mansfield: Syntactical Analysis. One of the ways to avoid redundant repetition in English is by using the pattern of substitution. It can also help the reader to understand the text correctly. The aims of this research are to identify, classify, and describe the kinds of substitute or pro-form in the short story “The Garden Party”. In classifying and analyzing the data, the writer uses Aarts and Aarts’ theory (1982). This research uses descriptive method. The results of this research show that there are four kinds of substitution in short story “The Garden Party” by Katherine Mansfield namely pro-forms to replace a noun phrase, pro-forms to replace a verb phrase, pro-forms to replace a clause and pro-forms to replace adverbial of time and place.

Abstract

Deixis forms in English and Banggai language are very important in every communication to avoid misunderstanding between speaker and hearer. These forms can be found in human conversation.   This study is an attempt to identify, classify, analyze, and contrast the deixis in English and Banggai language. The research questions must be answered are : What are the kinds of deixis in English and Banggai language and what are the similarities and differences in both of the languages. To solve those problems, the writer uses the concepts of Lavinson and Lado. In terms of collecting data, the English data have been taken from some English books and Banggai data have been collected by interviewing the native speakers of Banggai language who live in Palam village in Banggai Kepulauan district. In makes this investigation, the writer uses the descriptive method based on  Levinson?s  and Lado?s theory. The result of this research shows that deixis in English and Banggai language have some similarities and differences, those are form, function, distribution and types. In terms of similarity those two  languages have function and distribution, and in terms of differences are form and types. The writer expects that this study can help students and readers to learn pragmatics aspects that is deixis. Abstract

This research entitled “Penggunaan Twitter dalam Belajar Kosakata Bahasa Inggris (Persepsi Mahasiswa)”. This research is part of second language acquisition and the objective of this research is to find out how the twitter users of English students at Faculty of Letters Sam Ratulangi University increase their vocabulary in English.   A qualitative research was used in this research to answer research question and the Blachowicz and Fisher’s theory is used in this research. The research took 25 students as samples. The data were taken through questionnaire and open ended questions (interview). The result shows that according to most of student’s perception student can be active in developing their understanding of words and ways to learn vocabulary through twitter, students can personalize word learning through twitter can immerse in words through twitter, can build on multiple sources of information to learn words through repeated exposure by reading tweets in twitter. This result supports the four principles which stated by Blachowicz and Fisher (2000), and it gives positive effect to students.   Keywords: Vocabulary Learning, Twitter, Student Perception

Abstract

This research entitled “Quantifier in the Novel Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children by Ransom Riggs is written to fulfill the requirement of finishing S1 degree in English Department Faculty of Letters Sam Ratulangi University. The aims of this research are to identify, classify and analyze the quantifiers that exist in the novel Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children written by Ransom Riggs  in terms of  function,  category and form. In analyzing the data the writer uses descriptive method and the concept of  Flor Aarts and Jan Aarts about English Syntactic Structure: Function and Categories in Sentence Analysis.                         In the novel Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children, it is found that there are three forms of the quantifier , they are simple, compound and complex ones. From the functional point of view, the quantifier in this novel has several functions. In the sentence or clause level, the quantifier functions as Subject, Subject Attribute, Predicator Compliment, Direct Object, Indirect Object and Adverbial. In the phrase level, the quantifier can only function as the head of noun phrase, both as the head of noun phrase and determiner, and as determiner only. It also can function as post modifier of noun phrase.                                   Here are some examples of the quantifier in English : someone, somebody, something, anyone, anybody, everyone, everybody, no one, none, some, any, each, all, both, either, few, little, every and no and so on. ____________________________________ Keywords : Functions, Category, Forms, Novel, Miss Peregrine's Home for  Peculiar Children.

Abstract

Jonas Brothers’ song lyrics which are about love become the data of this piece of writing. The development of Jonas Brothers’ lyrics main theme, in this case love divided into the sub themes of friendship, unrevealed love, one sided love, waiting, regretting, and separating become the focus of this piece of writing. In terms of methodology, the “contrast analysis” is applicable for data collection. The theory based on Wellek and Warren, idea is a form of philosophy and it is leading into ideas. Perrine’s definition of theme saying that theme belongs to a part of human’s experience. Whereas for the purpose of analyzing Roberts’ paradigm including the descriptive method are applied. The result findings show that there are six sub themes which develop from the theme of love. The sub themes of friendship and unrevealed love dominate the whole writing.
