Abstract

This study is an attempt to identify, analyze, and describe the types of direct and indirect speech in English and Bungku language. In collecting data, the writer describes and identifies the sentences which refers to direct and indirect speech in English and Bungku language. Bungku language are used by the people who lives in Morowali district, especially in Bungku village. The writer also describes the types of direct and indirect in English and Bungku language and find out the similarities and the differences of direct and indirect used the concept of Quirk et al, Marcella Frank and Digby Beaumont descriptively. The result of this investigation shows that not only English has direct and indirect speech but also Bungku language has it. In analyzing the data, the writer uses the theory of Quirk et al (1973), about direct and indirect speech.   ______________________________________________________________________________ Key words:      Direct and Indirect Speech, English and Bungku Language, Contrastive Analysis.

Abstract

This research is about “The Terms of Food in English and Pasan Language: A Contrastive Analysis”. This research is attempt to identify, analyze, classify and contrasting the terms of food which are used in English and Pasan language. The English data have been collected from text books, dictionaries, and website, whereas the Pasan language data have been elicted from some informants. The descriptive method is used to describe, analyze, classify the kinds of food by using Frisch’s concept. After describing the kinds of food in English and Pasan language, the writer contrast both of those languages to find out the similarities and differences by using Lado’s theory. Theoretically, the significance of this study is to give contribution to the development of language particularly in the field of ethnolinguistics regarding to the terms of food. Particularly, this research will give additional information to the readers about types of food in English and Pasan language. The results show that the kinds of English and Pasan language food terms consist of two groups, they are solid food and beverages/drinks. Solid food consist of fruits, vegetables, bread, meat, fish, and seafood, and cooked food. Beverages/drinks consist of alcoholic drinks and non-alcoholic drinks. But their differences are English food terms (fruit and vegetable) consist of some types, whereas Pasan language food terms (fruits and vegetables) do not. It is expected that this research will help the students to learn food terms  in particular, and to understand the language in general. Abstract

The William Shakespeare’s drama namely The Merchant of Venice is choosen to be the focus of my discussion in this piece of writing which is later on specified into characters of the three female characters and their strategies in reaching their own goals. The objectives of this piece of writing are to identify, describe and analyzethe character as well as the strategies conducted by the female characters in this case Portia,Nerrisa and Jessica, the strategies to reach their goals in the drama. The writer applies Roberts’ paradigm to indicate the characters of the female characters and stick to the definition of “strategy” by Sjahfrizal to analyze the strategy of Portia, Nerrisa and Jessica. The method used is descriptive. In terms of methodology three components become significant. Those are concept, paradigm, theory and methodof research. The concept deal with characters’ seeking process by Roberts and strategy by Sjahfrizal. Whereas in terms of analysing a descriptive method is applicable. The resultfindingsshow that there are some  significanthuman characters found within the female characters such as brave, unselfish, wise, kind, trusty, loyal, smart, and so forth. Followed withstrategies namely planning arrangement, corporation, opportunity, and acting out to be different.     Keywords: Character, Female, Strategy, Drama

Abstract

In dieser Untersuchung wird über die deiktische Elemente in dem literarischen Werk gesprochen. Die Datenquelle wird aus dem Roman “Und sagte kein einziges Wort” von Heinrich Böll gesammelt. Als die theoretische Grundlage verwendet die Schreiberin die Meinungen von Bünting, Klein, und Grebe. Die deiktische Elemente bestehen aus den lokaldeiktischen Elemente, temporaldeiktischen Elemente, performatorischen Elemente, und Objektdeixis. Die Untersuchung hat  Ziele, um die Arten der Deixis im  Roman “und sagte kein einziges Wort” zu finden, zu klassifizieren und dann zum Bestimmen und Beschreiben die Arten der Deixis, die am meisten in diesem Roman verwendet werden. Die Schreiberin benutzt den pragmatische  Ansatz und deskriptive Methode, um den Roman “Und sagte kein einziges Wort” zu analysieren. Die Schlüßfolgerung der Forschung wird gezogen, daß der Roman “und sagte kein einziges Wort” die Arten der Deixis enthält, die aus den lokaldeiktischen Elemente, temporaldeiktischen Elemente, performatorischen Elemente, und Objektdeixis bestehen. Die performatorische Elemente werden am meisten in diesem Roman verwendet.       Schlüsselwörter:  Deixis, Roman, Pragmatik

Abstract

This skripsi is entitled “Penggunaan Pembentukan Kata Bahasa Inggris dalam Facebook”. In present day, most of people use internet in their life. Internet offers a information of the world from one place to another. Besides, it is a helpful tool in communicating and researching all subject and help to connect with what we are learning to the real world. Communication is a medium to build a relation among people. People use language to do communication. In communication people use word to express their feeling and to deliver their idea. In other words they need words to communicate with others verbally or non-verbally. The objective of this research is to identify and to classify the use of word formation of clipping, blending, compounding, backformation, borrowing, acronym, and initialism based on the theories of O’Grady (1987), Lieber (2009) and supporting theory by Adam (2005). The result of this research shows that there are 7 kinds of English word formations that are used in Facebook, such as: clipping 20 data, blending 7 data, compounding 9 data, backformation 5 data, borrowing 6 data, acronym 7 data, and initialism 8 data. Besides, there is a new word formation process such as gr8, l8, n8, b4, f9, and cu used in Facebook which do not exist in English word formations based on  O’Grady’s, Lieber’s,  and Adam’s theories. Abstract

The skripsi is entitled “Keberanian dalam Novel To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee”. The objective of this research is to analyze the bravery as the main theme in the novel To Kill a Mockingbird. The data are collected by focusing on the character, plot and setting which describe about the main theme in the story. This research uses the theory of Stanton (1965) in analyzing the data. The writer uses descriptive method intrinsically. Intrinsic approach is to examine the elements within the novel itself; in this case, it is use to identify some character’s habits in connection with the theme by looking at other elements in the novel. The result of this research shows that Lee has the ability to express the bravery in every aspects of life in the Novel To Kill a Mockingbird based on the real life. the conclusion of the analysis about the main theme based on the character, plot and setting shows that The Finch who are the main characters in the novel To Kill a Mockingbird have a great bravery, never give up, and mature to see all the things. Lee was described the main theme with clearly explanation, it seen in the whole story To Kill a Mockingbird. Keywords: Theme, Bravery, and To Kill a Mockingbird

Abstract

This  research attempts to identify , describe and analyze the imperative sentences in the novel The Kill Order written by James Dashner. Imperative sentence is the verb that is used to give command, warning, advice, instruction, and request. The verb is one of the four parts of moods that are subjunctive, indicative, and infinitive. The  data are taken from the novel of James Dashner, The Kill Order. The indentified data are analyzed according to the concept of Aarts and Aarts on form and function of  imperative sentences  in communication.  In analyzing  the data the writer uses descriptive method. The problem of this research are focused on what are the forms and functions of imperative sentence found in the novel The Kill Order. The aims of the research are to find out the forms and function of imperative sentence in the novel The Kill Order by James Dashner. The result of this research shows that the function of these entire imperative sentences  found in novel are command, wish, invitation and warning.  Command is the most used function in the novel.     Key word: Imperative Sentences, Syntactic Analysis, Novel The Kill Order
