Abstract

ABSTRACT  This  title of this research is “Salam dan Ungkapan Perpisahan dalam Bahasa Inggris dan Bahasa Sangihe : Suatu Analisis Kontrastif”. The aims of this study are to identify, describe and contrast the forms and pattern of greetings and leave-takings in English and Sangiric Language.  This research uses descriptive and contrastive analysis. The data in English were collected from books related to sociolinguistics, book of speaking, and source from internet, the data in Sangiric Language  were collected by writing and recording the conversations that occurred on the situation, the time and opportunity in places such as: the conversation that occurred while passing on the street, conversations between family members (in the house), a conversation between teachers and school officials, a conversation at the office, place of worship and other, the data Analyzed were using the consepts of Fishman, Tillit and Bruder.  The result of this research shows that greetings and leave-takings in English and Sangiric Language have two forms; they are formal and informal. In addition, the writer finds that there are three patterns in English and Sangiric Language on greetings. Those patterns are the  mutual formal greetings, the mutual informal greetings and the non mutual greetings. The patterns of English leave-taking are the same as their greetings. On the other hand, Sangirics Language has only two patterns of non mutual leave-takings, formal and informal.  Greetings and leave-takings in English and Sangiric Language has differences. For instance, greetings and leave-takings in English are various. Abstract

ABSTRACT  This research is entitled “Taboo Words in English and Sangerese: A Contrastive Analysis”. The objectives of this research are to identify and classify the types of taboo words and to analyze the differences of taboo words in English and Sangerese.  This research uses a descriptive method. There are three steps to finish this research, those are preparation, read the theory of sociolinguistics related to taboo words, get information through browsed internet about the taboo, and looked for previous thesis related to taboo. The second step is data collection, the data of taboo words in the English were taken from library research and previous researches; while in Sangerese were taken from native speakers in three vilages: Kauhis, Karatung I and Karatung II, subdistrict Manganitu, in Sangihe Island. The third step is to analyze the data that using the theory of Wardhaugh (1986:230) and were contrasted to find the differences using Lado theory.   The results of this research shows that there are 53 taboo words found in Sangerese and they were classified into ten types those are: sex, bodily function, animal, death, excretion, curse, eating, fisherman, devil, and address terms. It also shows that the causes of using taboo words are to express the emotion, such as anger, happy, and surprises, to talk about sex, to joke, and to insult.  Keywords: Taboo Words; English and Sangerese

Abstract

ABSTRACT  This research has a title “ Kalimat Imperatif dalam Bahasa Inggris dan Bahasa Saluan” and focuses on the types, functions, similarities, and differences of imperative sentences on English and Saluan language. The research questions are: what are the types and functions, and what are the similarities and differences of imperative sentences in English and Saluan language.   The data in English were collected from some English grammar books and data in Saluan language were taken from ten informants who know well about Saluan language using the interview method. After collecting the data, the writer identified and classified the imperative sentences in English and Saluan language. Then the data were analysed using contrastive analysis method, which means that the writer contrasted the data between English and Saluan language to find out the similarities, and differences. There are two types of imperative sentences in English and Saluan language, namely positive and negative imperative sentences. In terms of function, the imperative sentences both in English and Saluan Language have function as command, wish, invitation, instruction and warning. Though the imperative sentences in English and Saluan language have similarities, these languages show differences in terms of the use of words which are related to the socio-cultural aspects.  Keywords: Imperative sentence, English Saluan language, Contrastive analysis.

Abstract

ABSTRACT This research entitled “Prinsip Kesopanan dalam Ujaran Mahasiswa Semester 6 Jurusan Sastra Inggris Fakultas Ilmu Budaya: Suatu Analisis Pragmatik” focuses on maxim related to the principle of politeness. The problem of this research are: what kinds of politeness principle are in the utterances used by 6th semester’s students at English Department Faculty of Humanities and what function of politeness principle are in the utterances used by 6th semester’s students at English department Faculty of Humanities. The purpose of this research is to identify,clasify,analyze, and describe the function and type of politeness in maxim used that can be shown in daily activities from students in 6th semester’s English department Faculty of Humanities. In collecting data, the writer concentrates on the utterances which contain the principle of politeness produced by their activities in class. The collected data are analyzed based on Leech’s theory. The result shows  that there are six types of maxim from the utterances of students in 6th semester’s, they are: tact maxim, generosity maxim, approbation maxi, modesty maxim, agreement maxim and sympathy maxim. It is expected that this research will help students and other readers in learning the pragmatic aspects, especially about maxim in politeness principle. Keyword: Politeness, Utterances, Pragmatic

Abstract

ABSTRACT  This study is an attempt to identify, classify, analyze and contrast the English and Karo language which focuses on the interrogative sentences in relation to their forms and functions.  The writer analyzed interrogative sentences based on the concept of Quirk (1985), and contrasted them by using Lado’s theory (1957).  The Karo language data were two hundred and fifty items as the English data were one hundred and forty items. The result showed that interrogative sentences in English and Karo language have similarity in form and function. English has three forms of interrogative sentences such as yes-no question, wh-question and alternative question and Karo language has three question forms such as yes-no question, wh question (Kai, ija, engkai, isai, ndigan, uga, siapai, kuja) and alternative question. Abstract

ABSTRACT This research is an attempt to describe and analyse the kinship terms of English and Korean that are two different groups of language which have specific pattern of kinship terminologies. They have a special set terms to indicate the kinship relations. The aim of this research is to contrast the kinship terms in English and Korean by using Lado‟s concept. The concept of kinship terms is adapted from Murdock‟s book Social Structure (1949). The English data were collected from several relevant books, internet and previous thesis about kinship terms that have been done before, whereas the Korean data were collected from participants who are native Korean. The result of this research shows that kinship terms of English and Korean have similarities in terms of sex, generation, and decedence. The differences of both languages that English kinship terms does not contain  the semantic meaning, while the Korean does. In the generation, the English has four generations above and below ego, while Korean has two generations above and below ego.  Keywords: Kinship Terms, English and Korean, Contrastive Analysis

Abstract

ABSTRACT This research entitled “Preposition in Album Take Off Your Pants and Jacket by Blink 182” is written to classify and analyze the form as well as the function of the preposition found in the Album.  The writer uses a theory from Aarts and Aarts (1982) to classify the forms of preposition and analyze the function. The method used in this research is descriptive method, and the data were taken from the Album by Blink 182. The result of this research shows that in the album Take Off Your Pants And Jacket there are several forms and function of preposition in prepositional phrase. The forms are simple and complex preposition. The function of preposition in prepositional phrase refer to, preposition in prepositional phrase as prepositional constituents, preposition in prepositional phrase as postmodifier noun phrase and adjective phrase, and preposition in prepositional phrase as prepositional complement.
