Abstract

ABSTRACT This study is about Indirect Speech in English and Batak language. The research questions are what are the types of indirect speech in English and Batak language and what are the similarities and defferences Indirect Speech in both languages. The aim of the research is an attempt to identify, to describe the types and to analyze the indirect speech in English and Batak language contrastively. In collecting data, the writer asks 4 informants, who can speak Batak Language well. The genders of informant are male and female approximately 45-60 years old who stay in Manado 20-30 year. In English data, the writer took an example of Indirect Speech from the book written by Quah, Josephin (1993). The writer collected data and identified the sentences which refers to indirect speech in English and Batak language. The writer also described the types of Indirect speech in English and Batak language and contrast them to find out the similarities and the differences of Indirect Speech by using the concept of Quick, dkk (1973:341) and Lado descriptively. The result of this investigation shows that English has indirect speech as well as Batak language and also has the similarities and differences. In the similarities, English and Batak language have the same in the types and form as quotation marks, question sentences, statements, commands, exclamations and also changes in the time and place. In the differences, English has changed in to be and auxiliary verbs, while Batak language has not. Key words:    Indirect Speech, English and Batak Language, Contrastive Analysis.

Abstract

ABSTRACT This skripsi, entitled “Kemahiran Menulis Karangan Narasi Dalam Bahasa Inggris Mahasiswa Semester IV Jurusan Sastra Inggris Fakultas Ilmu Budaya Universitas Sam Ratulangi” is an attempt to analyze the ability of the fourth semester English Department students in writing narrative essay. The data were taken from the students’ writing assignment. All data were classified based on the Keraf (2003:45) were scored using analytic scoring from1 to 5 on five aspects of evaluation : spelling and punctuation, vocabulary/diction, sentence structure, composition organization and narrative essay characteristics, and the relationship between theme and contents of the essay. The research findings show that, (1) 86,67% of the students got the highest score in spelling and punctuation; (2) 93,33% in vocabulary/diction; (3) 63,33% in sentence structure; (4) in evaluation of composition organization and narrative essay characteristics, 16,67% of the students wrote the complete essay while 76,67% students did not write one part of the essay, e.g. introductory or closing paragraph; and (5) in the relationship between theme and the contents of the essay, 50% of the students got the highest score. In addition, the total average of all aspects of evaluation is 87,2%. However, it is suggested that teachers should help students in writing better narrative essays by guiding them to have complete parts of the essay.     Keywords : Writing skill, narrative essay, essays.

Abstract

ABSTRAKTION In dieser Untersuchung wurdeDie Kohäsivsgramatik im Evangelium nach Johannes von Johannes beschrieben. Die Quelle der Daten wurden aus Evangelium nach Johanes genommen. Um die Daten zu analysieren benutzte, die Schreiberin die deskriptive Qualitativ Methode. Als die theoretische Grundlage werden die Meinungen von Brinker, Halliday und Hasan, und Beaugrande und Dressler. Halliday und Hasan sagen, daß die Kohäsionmitteln in zwei Teile zu teilensind; nämlich die gramatische Kohäsion und die lexikalische Kohäsion. Die gramatische Kohäsion aus besteht  dieReferenzeskohäsion, die Substitutionskohäsion, die Ellipsenskohäsion, und die Konjunktionskohäsion. Klaus Brinker nennt die Kohäsionmitteln als die Wiederaufnahme. Die Wiederaufnahme wird in zwei Formen geteilt, nämlich die expliziter Wiederaufnahme und die impliziter Wiederaufnahme. Die gramatische Kohäsiongehört zur expliziter Wiederaufnahme. Aber nennt er die Substitution als die Teile von Wiederaufnahme. Beaugrande und Dressler  sagen, daß die Substitution in Paraphrase ist. Abstract

ABSTRACTS Pragmatics is the study of the relations between language and context that are basic to an account of language understanding. The most obvious single way in which the relationship between language and context is reflected in the structures of the language themselves through the phenomenon of the deixis. The research questions of this investigation are what types of deixis are found in the film Snow White and The Seven Dwarfs and how the use of deixis in the film. The method used in the research is descriptive method. The data are identified and analyzed descriptively. The data are analyzed based on the theory of Levinson. The result shows that there are five types of deixis found in this film. Those are person deixis, place deixis, time deixis, discourse deixis, and social deixis, whereas the usages of deixis found in the film are symbolic and gestural usage. It is espected that this research will help the students and other readers to learn the pragmatic aspects, especially on deixis.   Keywords: Deixis, Film: Snow White and The Seven Dwarfs. Abstract

ABSTRACT This research design entitled “Code Switching In Backpacker Community in Facebook” is an attempt to identify, analyze, and find the reason of code switching phenomena in backpacker community. The theory used in this researchareby Hoffman and Fishman and this research appliesadespcriptive method. The result of this research shows  that there are two kinds of code switching, intra-sentensial switching and inter-sentensial switching. The reasons of the happening of the code switching in Backpacker community are through its speaker, listener or opponent speaker’s sayings, changing situation of the presence of the third person, the formalchangesinto informal ones, change of subject, and itsprestige. Abstract

ABSTRACTS Imperative sentence is a setence that is used to issue orders or directives.Imperative sentence contains a verb in the imperative mood. In terms of communication, imperative sentence is also used to signal, permission or any kind of exhortation. It is called illocutionary force. English and Siau language are two languages which come from different language families. English belongs to the Indo-European language, whereas Siau language belongs to Austronesian. The research questions is what the grammatical form and its meaning of imperative sentence in English and Siau language? and what are similarities and differences of English and Siau language in terms of formand meaning in communication? The objective of the research is to find out the grammatical form and its meaning in communication between English and Siau language. The data of English and Siau language is analysed based on the concept of Beaumont and Granger. The Siau data are taken from some informants who know Siau language well. It is hoped that this study can help students or readers to understand imperative sentences in terms of their differences as well as their similarities. ---------------------------------- Key word: Imperative sentence in English and Siau language, Contrastive Analysis.

Abstract

ABSTRACT This research entitled “Kalimat Tanya dalam Novel The Conffesion Karya Jhon Grisham” is written to fulfill the requirement of finishing S1 degree in Faculty of Letter The aim of the research is to identify, to describe and to analyze interrogative sentence in terms of its types. In analyzing the data, the writer uses descriptive method and by using the concept of Aarts and Aarts about interrogative sentence in terms of its types. The result of this research shows that interrogative sentence has five types which are  yes/no question  question tag  interrogative sentence formed by question word Wh-word, interrogative sentence in use negative form, and interrogative sentence indefinitely. Abstract

ABSTRACT This researchentitled “Illocutionary Act in the Film The Change-Up by David Dobkin: A Pragmatic Analysis”. It is an analysis of  pragmatic investigation that focus on one aspect of speech acts called illocutionary act. It is an attempt to find the kinds and functions of illocutionary act in the film. The data have been taken from the characters utterances’ in the film. The writer analyzed the data descriptively by concentrating on utterances which contain illocution. The theory used in this research is taken from Searle’s theory about illocutionary acts’ classification. The findings of this research show that the kinds and functions of the illocutionary act are found in the film “The Change-Up”. It is classified into five categories, those are assertives: stating, suggesting, vowing and reporting; directives: ordering, commending, requesting, and advising; commissives: promising and offering; expressive: thanking, praising, and blaming; declarations: naming, suspending, and declaring. Theoretically, the writer extends that this research can give any contribution for students or readers to understand kinds of  illocutionary act and their functionsare not only in this film, but also in other literary works especially in daily communication. Abstract

ABSTRACT Semiotics is the study of signs. Sign is the unity of a form of a signifier  and signified. Through the combination between the signifier and the signified, we can find meaning in an advertisement. In this research, the writer  takes the form of signifier and signified contained in an advertisement in the Manado Post newspaper as the object of research. The purpose of the research is to identify and analyze the signifier and the signified contained in the advertisement in Manado Post newspaper as one sign systems from the semiotics point of view.  The aspects of research which are related  to the sign systems proposed by Roland Barthes are the signifier, the signified, denotation and      connotation. The data about the cigarette advertisements collected from various editions of Manado Post newspaper. All the collected data are analyzed based on  Barthes theory of signs, and the method used is descriptive method. The results of this research indicate that each cigarette advertisement in Manado Post newspapers has the same of signified with different signifier. Every cigarette advertisement has the meaning contained in it, that is the denotation and connotation meaning. Diverse connotations, the determination of the meaning or interpretation depends on knowledge, experience, background, and even the emotions of the reader.   Keywords:    Semiotics, Signifier, Signified, Denotation, Connotation
