Abstract

ABSTRACT  This research aims at identifying and classifying the kinds of signs and to analyze the meaning and the messages that are found on beauty product advertisements in Elle magazine October 2016 edition. In identifying the kinds of signs in the advertisements, this research uses Peirce’s theory of sign classification that divides signs into three types based on its object, namely index, icon and symbol. In analyzing the meaning of signs and the messages in the advertisements, this research uses Barthes’ theory that identifies types of messages found in illustrated advertisements, namely linguistic messages, uncoded iconic message and coded iconic message in advertisement in finding the meaning and the messages delivered in the advertisements.  The result of this research shows that there are 20 icons, 20 indexes and 8 symbols found in the advertisements, and also each advertisements brings persuasive messages and meanings in order to attract readers. Abstract

ABSTRACT        This study entitled “ The Adjective in English and Tabaru Language: A Contrastive Analysis‟‟ aims at identifiying and classifiying the adjectives in English and Tabaru Language, in terms of froms types and position.        The English data were collected from some English book. while the Tabaru Language data was collected from six s informants.        The data was analyzed  using Frank , than theory than contrasted   Lado‟s theory to find out  the differences  adjective of both Language in terms of their types and position.        The result shows that English  has six types of adjectives those are determiner ( article, demonstrative adjective, possessive adjective, numeral adjective, relative and interrogative adjective, and adjective of indenfinitie quantity). And descriptive adjectives whereas Tabaru Language has those types except relative adjective in term of position. Tabaru Language doesn‟t have adjectives after in definite pronoun. Abstract

ABSTRACT   This research is entitled “Afiks-Afiks Derivasi Bahasa Inggris dan Bahasa Batak Toba (Suatu Analisis Kontrastif)”, written as a research report to describe and analyze the derivational affixes of both English and Toba Batak language in term of form, function and meaning in verb, noun, adjective, and adverb. The objective of this research is to find out the similarities and the differences of derivational affixes in English and Toba Batak language by using O’Grady’s (1987) theory and contrasting them using Lado’s (1971) method.  The English data were collected from several English textbooks, namely  Contemporary Linguistic Analysis : An Introduction (1987) by O’Grady and the data of Toba Batak Language were taken from four native speakers as informants who were born and lived in the land of Toba Batak and they were selected based on age, gender, and intelligence.  The results of this research show that the types of English derivational affixes are prefixes and suffixes. The types of Toba Batak derivational affixes are prefixes, suffixes, infixes, and confixes. The functions of both English and Toba Batak derivational affixes are to create new lexeme that may change the parts of speech or not.  The similarities of English and Toba Batak derivational affixes are both English and Toba Batak derivational affixes have prefixes and suffixes process. The differences of both derivational affixes are English derivational affixes form new English words through prefixation and suffixation; meanwhile, there are infixation and confixation in Toba Batak language. In context of meaning, English derivational affixes have prefixes that have negative meaning, but Toba Batak derivational affixes have no prefixes that denote negative meaning.  Key Word : Derivational Affixes of English, Toba Batak language, Contrastive Analysis.

Abstract

ABSTRACT The focus of this research problem is (1) what affixes can form verbs in Pamona language ?, (2) what is the function and meaning of verb-form affix in Pamona language ?. The purpose of this research are: (1) to describe verbal forming affixes in Pamona language, (2) to identify the function and meaning of verbal-form affix in Pamona language. This research uses the method of referring, with tapping technique and technique of luctive conversation. Further analyzed and presented using referential method, and in data analysis used formal and informal method. The verbal-forming affix in Pamona is (1) the prefix {maN-}, {moN-}, {me}, {na-}, {mombe-}, {mampo-}, {mampaka-}, {te- }, {-i} with the group, {-waka} with the group, {maN - / - ka}, {na - / - ka}, and {-um-}. Abstract

ABSTRACT  This research which is entitled “Kode-kode Dalam Pujian dan Penyembahan Ibadah Karismatik” focuses on codes that can be found in almost all aspects of human life. In this category, codes are used in charismatic worship. The aims of this research are to identify and classify kinds of codes and to analyze and describe, meanings of codes that can be found in charismatic worship.  The writer uses Peirce’s theory about signs and codes (in Noth 1955)  in the process of identifying and classifying kinds of codes and the process of analyzing and describing the meanings of codes used in charismatic worship. The data were collected in Mawar Sharon Tower of Strength Church Manado. The writer uses descriptive method to analyze the forms of codes found in charismatic worship activities in this research. The results of this research show that there are 22 codes used in charismatic worship. The writer classifies them into 2 parts; the first part is song map codes, which consist of 16 codes: verse, 3 times repetition before ending, 2 times repetition before ending, last repetition before ending, ending, overtune, lowertune, cooling down, overtune+chorus, overtune+3 times repetition before ending, full music, prechorus, solo drum, solo piano. The second part is key tone codes, which consist of 7 codes: key C, key D, key E, key F, key G, key A, key B. The meaning of the song map codes is to communicate with the praise and worship team to lead the song to be sung from different parts. The meanings of the key tones codes are to give and to change the key tones that are used in worship.  Keywords: Charismatic Worship, Codes, Signs,  Descriptive Method

Abstract

ABSTRACT The title of this research is Cohesive Analysis of Barrack Obama’s Speech at the University Of Indonesia. It is an attempt to analyze and explain the cohesive items in Barrack Obama speech. This research is expected to help students or readers in understanding the using of grammatical cohesive in text of speech. The objectives of this research are to identify, classify, and analyse descriptively the aspects of grammatical cohesion  on the text of  Barrack Obama’s speech at the University of Indonesia. The theory  used  in this research is taken from a book called the Perspective of Discourse Analysis: Theory and Practice by Alba-Juez (2009), which states that one of those criteria which can be used to analyse the  discourse is the aspects of cohesion. And the theory was supported this research is taken  from Halliday and Hasan (1976). The theory focused on the aspects of  grammatical cohesion. The grammatical cohesion is used to link the elements of a text, namely pronoun, substitution, ellipsis, and conjunction.  The text of speech is taken from the internet. The result shows that this speech contains the four types grammatical aspects of cohesion as suggested by Alba-Juez(2009). There are 34 paragraphs which contain the grammatical aspects of cohesion.The most gramatical  cohesive  used was Pronouns and conjunction.    Keywords : Aspects of Cohesion, Grammatical Cohesion, Barrack Obama’s Speech

Abstract

ABSTRACT This research which is entitled “Tanda V pada Fotografi Potret dalam Koleksi Foto 2017: Shutterstock” is focused on connotation and myths that can be found in the portrait photography. The aims of this research are to analyze the connotation and and describe the myths of V-sign that can be found in portrait phorography. This research uses Roland Barthes‟ theory in the process of analyzing the connotation and describing the myths of V-sign. The source of portrait photography was taken from photo collection 2017: Shutterstock, published by the Jon Oringer on their website at www.shutterstock.com. The method of this research is descriptive method. Every connotation and myth of V-sign found in the portrait photography was analyzed and described according to the process called order of signification.  The result of this research shows that based on the theory of Barthes there are seven different connotations contained in V-sign in the portrait photography. Those are happiness, underestimate, relief, success, independence, relax, political campaign. In addition, there are five kinds of myth contained in V-sign in the portrait photography. Those are are salute, humiliation, peace, victory, contradiction, freedom, two fingers salute.  The writer hopes that this study will help the reader to understand about semiotics especially connotation and myth and how those convey deeper understandings of meanings in portrait photography.  Keywords: V-sign, connotation and myth, portrait photography
