Abstract

ABSTRACT This research is entitled ‘Preposition in English and in Manadonese Malay (A Contrastive analysis). The objects of the research are to identify, classify, analised, and described the forms and meanings of preposition in English and in Manadonese Malay language, and to find out the similarities and differences. The English data were taken from some grammatical books and journals of  English teaching forum while the data in Manadonese Malay language have been collected by interviewing some informants. This research used descriptive method. The writer used the concept Crystal (1999), Arts and Arts (1982), Harman (1992), and Lado (1979). It is found that the prepositions in English and Manadonese Malay have similarities and differences. The similarities can be found in their forms and meanings. Both languages have simple and complex preposition which is indicating cause or reasons, condition, direction, instrument, manner, participation, place, purpose, source, and time. The differences are shown  in the forms. While  English language has fourteen complex forms of  preposition Manadonese Malay language only has one complex forms of preposition. ABSTRACT  Sejarah Jemaat Gereja Masehi Injili di Minahasa (GMIM) Sion Teling Sentrum Manado Tahun 1966 – 2016 Yesinta Kaawoan, Dra. Sientje Suatan, M.Si, Dra. Fientje Thomas, M.Si. Jurusan Ilmu Sejarah Fakultas Ilmu Budaya Universitas Sam Ratulangi Manado   Topik Penelitian ini adalah “Sejarah Jemaat Gereja Masehi Injili di Minahasa (GMIM) Sion Teling Sentrum Manado Tahun 1966 – 2016. Dengan 2 poin dalam penulisan yaitu : 1. Bagaimana Sejarah Jemaat GMIM Sion Teling Sentrum Manado  2. Bagaimana perkembangan Jemaat GMIM Sion Teling Sentrum di manado pada Tahun 1966 – 2010 Dalam penulisan ini penulis menggunakan metode sejarah yang terdiri dari empat tahap, yaitu : Heuristik, Kritik Analisa, Interpretasi dan yang terakhir Historiografi. Kekristenan secara sistematis diperkenalkan di Minahasa oleh Johann Friedrich Riedel dan Johann Gottlieb Schwars.  Jemaat GMIM Sion Teling Sentrum Resmi menjadi Jemaat mandiri terhitung sejak 1 Januari tahun 1966.

Abstract

ABSTRACT This research is entitled “Adverbs in English and in Sangihe language Siau dialect (A Contrastive Analysis)”. This research attempts to identify, classify, analyzed, and describe the forms and meanings of adverbs in English and in Sangihe language Siau dialect, as well as to contrast them to find out the similarities and differences. The English data were taken from some grammatical books, whereas the data in Sangihe language Siau dialect were taken by some informants who speak Siau dialect well. This research used descriptive method. In this research, the writer used the Concepts of Radford et.al. (2009), Lyons (1975), Frank (1972) and Lado (1971). It was found that English and Sangihe language Siau dialect  have similarities and differences.  The similarities can be found in the forms dan meanings, both language has simple form which is indicating how, where, when, degree, and why. While the differences is adverbs in English language can be formed by adding suffix      {-ly} and    {-ward(s)}. While in Sangihe language Siau dialect there is no found that form. Abstract

ABSTRACT The title of this research is “Figurative Languange in Robert Burns Poems” It is an attempt to analyze and explain the figurative languange and categorize it in accordance with the  types and meaning of figurative language itself. The objectives of this research are to identify, classify, and analyze descriptively  the type of the figurative language in Robert Burns Poems used Laurance Perrine’s Theory (1983). The result shows that this research can be summarized as follows: first, in the poems of Robert Burns, there are seven types of figurative language, including: personification, methaphors, simile, irony, symbols, synecdoche, and hyperbole. The personification and  hyperbole types dominate every poem of Robert Burns. Second, the meaning of figurative language used by Robert Burns in his poems in general describe about love feelings, natural atmosphere, and social status in his era.   Keywords: Poems, Figurative language, Robert Burns.

Abstract

ABSTRACTThe purpose of the research is to get an idea of the elements of the literary work which is contained in the short stories of protest.To analyze the intrinsic elements are used structural approach according to Teeuw (1984) research results obtained among others. 1. The main theme of the short story is social criticism 2. The short story flows are confidential 3. The time background of the place plays well. Abstract

ABSTRACT Sir Arthur Conan Doyle was one of England prose writer in the genre of detective fiction. His fiction “consulting detective”, Sherlock Holmes, was still famous around the globe until today. He wrote the total of 60 cases of Sherlock‟s adventures. His works mainly published in Victorian era. The research entitled “Nilai-Nilai Moral Dalam Tiga Cerita Pendek Karya Sir Arthur Conan Doyle” aims to identify, classify and analyze the moral values through the character‟s dialogues and narrator‟s narratives and the relevance of those moral values with the Victorian era morality.  The data had been collected by focusing on the character‟s dialogues and narrator‟s narratives as the elements of prose which reveal the moral values within the three short stories entitled A Scandal in Bohemia, A Case of Identity and The Five Orange Pips. In order to analyze the moral values within the three short stories, the writer uses theory of function of literature by Wellek and Warren (1949), which they derived from Horace‟s Dulce et Utile about the purposes of literature which are to educate and entertain the readers and to analyze the relevance, the writer uses the theory of literature and sociology also by Wellek and Warren (1956) about how a literary work should be able to represent the reality of life. The writer finds that there are three moral values contained in those three short stories, which are, mutual assistance, concern, and giving respect to others and as for the relevance, the writer finds that Victorian era people has six values and there are two relevance between the moral values found in the three short stories and those six values, which are the relevance between mutual assistance and concern with a sense of duty and responsible towards the less well of and between respect and how the people of Victorian era give respect to their others.  Keywords: Moral Values, Victorian Era, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle

Abstract

ABSTRACT  This research entitled “Preposition in English and Talaud Language in the Book of Isaiah (A Contrastive Analysis)”. This research design aims at contrasting Preposition in English and Talaud language in the book of Isaiah in their forms and meanings in the sentence structure.   The problems of this research are what are the forms and meanings of preposition in English and Talaud language in the book of Isaiah and to find out the similarities and differences between them. The purpose of this study is to identify, classify, the forms and meanings of preposition in English and Talaud language in the book of Isaiah and to analyze the differences and similarities of preposition in these two languages.  The method of this study is descriptive method. Theories that used are Chrystal (1999), Aarts and Aarts (1982), Harman (1992) and Lado (1972). Investigation has been done through the library and field research. The English data has been collected from the Bible written in English, linguistic books, and from internet and whereas the Talaud data has been collected from the Bible written in Talaud language and the native informant speakers.   The result shows that English and Talaud language have similarities and differences in forms and meanings. In terms of form there is one-word preposition and multi-word preposition in English whereas in the Talaud language this case just found one preposition based on the data obtained. In terms of meaning both English and Talaud language have similarities.  Theoretically, the significance of this study is to give a reference in terms of prepositions especially the similarities and differences between English and Talaud language and is expected to be useful to develop syntax. Practically, this research is expected to help the students of English department or other readers in learning about preposition, especially about the forms and meanings of both language.   Keywords: Preposition, English and Talaud language, Contrastive Analysis
