Abstract

ABSTRACT In English there are two subclasses of verb; those are lexical verb and auxiliary verb. Modals are a class of auxiliary verb that are combined with the base form to make verb phrase with wide meaning. This study is an attempt to describe and analyze modals in the novel “The Swiss Family Robinson” by Johan Rudolf Wyss. The aim of this research is to identify and classify the form and meaning of  modals. The method which is used in this research is descriptive method. The data of modals have been taken from the sentences in the novel “The Swiss Family Robinson” and have been analyzed by using Quirk et.al. and Frank’s concepts. The result of this study shows that modal forms which are used namely will, shall, can, may, must, would, should, could, might, ought to, have to, be able to, and need, whereas dare is not found in the novel. The study can be continually done by analyzing modals in other literary works.   Keywords : Modals, Novel The Swiss Family Robinson

Abstract

ABSTRACT This research  entitled “Interrogative Sentences in English and Loloda Language” is an attempt to analyze and describe  English and Loloda  Language  focus on interrogative sentences in relation to their forms and functions in both languages.The data of English language are collected from several books, internet, and some theories that related  to this research, whereas the data of Loloda  language are collected by interviewing from some informants who know well about this language by using contrastive analysis approach. The data then analyzed and described. to find out the form and functionof interrogative sentence uses the concept of Frank (1972).To compare these two languages, the writer uses Lado’s (1957 ) concept. He said that contrastive analysis is a way to compare language elements in term of form, meaning, and distribution, in finding the differences and the similarities of both languages. The result of this research shows that English and Loloda language have similarities and differences. The similarities of two languages are found in form of interrogative sentences such as who, why, what, where, when, how (in English); nango, okia, moruoka, kiaka, idoa, sokonoke ( in Loloda) and function of question word of both languages. The differences between two languages are found, such as placing of question words,  using  “who” , taq questions and structure of sentence.   Keywords: Interrogative Sentences, English and Loloda Language. Abstract

ABSTRACT This research entitled “-Ed Forms in Journal Article of English Teaching Forum Volume 43 Number 4 Year 2005” by Pham HoaHiep, Bulent Alan and Fredricka L. Stoller: A Syntactical Analysis. This research is aimed identifying, classifying and analyzing the –ed form used in the journal article. Based on the types of the –ed forms the data collected from the journal articles were classified and analyzed according to the concept of Foley dan Hall (2003), Phillips (2000), Azar (2003), Aarts dan Aarts (1982). And based on the functions used the concept by Lado (2008) and Swam (1995). The result shows that there are five types of –ed forms used in the journal articles, namely; -ed forms in the present tense (14 data), -ed forms in passive voice (84 data), ed formsin past tense (29 data), -ed forms in participle adjective (92 data), –ed forms in subject implicit (20 data). The total –ed forms found in journal are 239 data. In this research, it is found that –ed form has two functions: the –ed form as verb and the –ed form as adjective.   Key words: -ed Form, Past Participle and Past Tense, Journal

Abstract

ABSTRACT   The research is entitled “Analisis Karakter Utama dalam Novela The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. HydeKarya Robert Louis Stevenson”. There are eight characters in this novella but only two major characters, and this analysis focuses on the analysis of major character “Dr. Jekyll” who is also known as “Mr. Hyde”. The main purpose of this research is to describe the personality’s: good and bad sides of the major character which is based on theory Robert’s theory. The researcher uses descriptive method and the data are taken from the novella itself. The data are analyzed intrinsically to find out the main character’s personality. After analyzing the personality of major character the writer finds that Dr. Jekyll  has both good and bad sides of his personality, and then he tries to make poison, try to separated these two different personalities.   Keywords: Major Character, Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, Good and Bad Personality.

Abstract

ABSTRAK The research entitled “Negative Sentence in English and Moni language: A Contrastive Analysis”, aims at identifying, describing and contrasting the use of negative sentences in English and Moni language. The author would like to find the form and meaning of negative sentence in English and Moni. The English data have been collected from several books, whereas the Moni language have been collected from interviewing of some informants. The collected data were classified according to their categories and analyzed descriptively based on the theorities of Quirk and Verhaar in terms of negative sentence structure and contrast the two languages by using the theory of Lado. The results of this study indicate that similarities and differences can be found in all kinds of negative sentences. English and Moni language have the same structure in term of negative sentences. Both languages are free of negative elements in the form of a single morpheme and free of negative elements in the interrogative sentence structure serves as a predicate.   Keyword : negative sentence structure, English and Moni language contrastive analysis.

Abstract

ABSTRACT This skripsi entitled suffix –ing in journal “English Teaching Forum” : a  Syntactical Analysis. The -Ing form is neutral with respect to time; the time that is intended often depends on the tense or the meaning of the main verb. The suffix -ing is often used loosely instead of the perfect form of the gerund object of verbs. The suffix -ing of a verb can be used as a present participle, Frank (1972: 315). This research aims at identifying, classifying, and analyzing, the suffix -ing used in journal “English Teaching Forum” in terms of forms and functions. The data of the suffix -ing were collected from journal article chapter 1-5 based on Arts and Arts’s (1982: 167), Lado’s (2008: 24-62), Quirk. et al’s., (1972: 242: 246) and Phillips’s (2000: 117)’s theories. In analyzing the data in terms of forms and function, the concept of Arts and Arts (1982: 167), were used. The method of this research is descriptive qualitative method. The results of this research show that the suffix -ing used in the sentences of the journal “English Teaching Forum are various namely : suffix -ing as present continuous tense (3 data), past continuous tense (1data), gerund (9 data), reduced clause (6 data), -ing form as adjective (25 data) and -ing form as clauses that have an explicit subject and non explicit subject (21 data ). Furthermore the -ing forms have three functions: as verb, noun and as adjective. The study results show that the –Ing form functioning as adjective is the most used in the journal articles mentioned.   Key Words: The suffix -ing, Journal : English Teaching Forum

Abstract

ABSTRACT   The research entitled “Prepositional Phrases in Academic Journal Article of the English Teaching Forum, Volume 41, No.4, 2003” is an attempt to identify, classify, and analyze the types of prepositional phrases in terms of forms and meanings in academic journal article. The method used in this research is descriptive qualitative method. The theories of Aarts and Aarts (1982), Frank (1972), and Foley and Hall (2003) were used in this research. The data of research were collected from three (3) different articles in journal of English Teaching Forum Volume 41, Number 4, 2003, and were identified, classified, and analyze in terms of forms and meanings. The results of this research show that there are 280 prepositional phrases, which classified in terms of form: the preposition can be followed by noun, noun phrase, pronoun, V+ing, Wh-clause, and prepositional phrase. In terms of meanings, it is divided into three: place, time (position), and place (direction).   Keywords: Prepositional phrases, meaning and form, academic journal article.

Abstract

This research design entitled ?Slangs in the Songs of Black Eyed Peas? is an attempt to identify the slangs in the songs of Black Eyed Peas, analyze and describe their forms and meanings. The theory  used in this research is by Bloomfield and this research applies a despcriptive methokd. Theoretically, this research will give a contribution to linguistic study especially on Sociolinguistics field more specifically on slangs found in the songs ofBlack Eyed Peas and also provide with rich information about slang.Practically, this study can help the students or the readers and the writer herself in understanding slang in terms of form and meaning in songs. The result show that the forms of slangs in the songs are abbreviation, facetious, misprounuciation, shortened forms, interjection, figurative expression, and nick name (calling person). There are some forms that cannot be found in the songs, they are interjection, and figurative expression form.   Keywords: slang, Songs of Black Eyed Peas, Bloomfield?s theory

Abstract

ABSTRACT   This research entitled “ English Code Switching in Saluan Language “ is attempt to identify, analyze, and find the reason of Code Switching in Togean district society and other places in Walea Kepulauan. The method used in research is descriptive.  Hoffmann and Fishmann’s concepts are used to find out the kinds of code switching and the reason of switching code. The result of this research shows that there are two kinds of code switching, they are intra-sentential code switching and inter-sentential code switching. The reason of code switching are the speaker, listener or opponent, changing the situation because of presence of a third person, changing from formal to informal, changing of subject, and for prestigious. Abstract

ABSTRACT   The title of this research is “The Influence of Society on Women’s Attitude toward Men in the Novel The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald”. The objectives of this research are to analyze the attitude of women toward men in The Great Gatsby and to analyze how the society influences this particular attitude. The data are collected by focusing on the attitude of women toward men and how the society gives influence on their attitude. By using descriptive method, the writer uses instrinsic approach to analyze the attitude of women toward men, and uses extrinsic method to analyze the influence of society on the attitude of women toward men in the novel. The result of this research shows that the women in The Great Gatsby are commonly full of confidence, they are free to express their opinion, modern, agressive, extravagant, matrealist and they love big parties so much. All of this attitude are appropriate with the society of New York at that time, when it was 1922. The conclusion of this research is that the society when The Great Gatsby was written really has big influence on  the attitude creation of women in the novel.   Keywords: Attitude, Society Influence and The Great Gatsby.
