Abstract

ABSTRACT This skripsi was done as a requirement to obtain bachelor Degree in English Department in Sam Ratulangi University. This research is entitled “Discourse Analysis on President Barrack Obama’s Speech ‘Legalization of Same-Sex Marriage’ ”. It is an attempt to analyze and explain the discourse analysis norms in Barrack Obama speech. There are three steps to finish this research. First step is preparation, the writer reads some books, internet sites, and other references about language, linguistic, and discourse analysis to find out the characteristics of data and theory which are relevant to the topics in this study. Second step is data collection, the writer take Barrack Obama’s speech on the internet and reads it for several times a day to have a deep understanding of the manuscript. Third step is data analysis, the collected data will be identified, classified, and analyzed based on the theory of Alba-Juez. The result of this research show that in cohesion  there are 77 pronouns, 4 subtitusion, no ellipsis, 21 conjuction and 14 lexical. The theory is taken from Alba-Juez (2008:20) for seven norms  and supported the theory by De Beaugrande & Dressler (1986:8) and Aarts and Aarts (1982:4).   Keywords: Discourse Analysis, Barrack Obama Speech

Abstract

ABSTRACT Objectives to be achhievd in this study areL1) how the relationship between the author and this work in the novel “Laskar Pelangi”.(2) describe aspects of the sociology of literature in the novel Laskar Pelangi the terms of character and characterization, social status, the behavior of the characters, as well as the events that occurred. This study is a review of sociology of literature using qualitative method. This research techniques include engineering data colletion, data conclusion, source of research data as the main data is the novel “Laskar Pelangi” and several books related to literature and other sources. The results of these studies show that the aspect of sociology in the novel Laskar Pelangi is a reality that occurs in the Malay society oppressed Belitong proverty but they remain determinend to pursue the dream. This novel also tells the story of how friendship can be interwoven between the characters in the novel.   Keywords: sociology of literature, aqualitative, novel Laskar Pelangi

Abstract

ABSTRACT This research, entitled “Error Analysis in the narrative composition of the students of SMAN 1 Langowan,” is an attempt to identify, classify and analyze the kinds of errors in the narrative composition produced by the students of SMAN 1 Langowan. This research gives contribution in terms of understanding the error analysis especially the errors of the narrative composition. Ellis’s theory was used to analyze the errors in the narrative composition of students of SMAN 1 Langowan. Data were taken from 40 students in XI IPA 5 of SMAN 1 Langowan by asking them to hand write a narrative composition at home in piece of paper about their experience when they were on holiday. The result of this research shows that there are three kinds of errors made by students; they are omission, misinformation and misordering. Errors of omission made by students are omission of to be, omission of the ending for plural nouns, omission of a preposition, omission of auxiliary verbs (to be, to do, to have and modals), omission of an article, and omission conjunction. Errors of misinformation are misinformation of preposition, misinformation of auxiliary verb, misinformation of singular and plural nouns, misinformation of colocation, and misinformation of word spelling. Abstract

ABSTRACT   In English, there are two subclasses of verb, they are lexical verbs and auxiliary verbs. Auxiliary verb is a helping verb which grammatically functions to form or to add meaning of the verb phrase. This study is an attempt to describe and analyze the auxiliary verbs which are found in the Album of Maroon 5 Overexposed and V. The aim of this research is to classify and identify the form, meaning and function of auxiliary verb used in the film. The method used in this research is descriptive method. The data of auxiliary verbs have been taken from the sentences in the album of Maroon 5 Overexposed and V and analyzed by using Hudson?s concept. The results of this study show that the auxiliary verbs found in the two album of Maroon 5 are categorized into two classes: primary auxiliary verb (am, is, are, were, was) and modal auxiliary verbs (can, could, may, might, will, would, should) however must, shall, be to, used to, need, be supposed to and dare are not found in these album. In terms of the meaning, the primary auxiliary verbs have no meaning in themselves, but the modal it means auxiliary verbs have their own meaning depending on the context. Can means ability and with negative it means inability. Could means ability and with negative it means inability. May means possibility. Will means willingness, representation of some situation, promise and agreement. Would means willingness. Abstract

ABSTRACT This study aimed to describe the meaning and forms of code switching and code mixing contained in “Hitam Putih” talkshow, August 2015 edition. The method used in this research is description method. Data analysis used in this research is listening to video talk downloaded through from youtube, researcher liste repeatedly until finding the code switching and code mixing in the conversation with the hosts and guest stars cohost in various themes raised, researcher then write in a notebook and separate code switching from code mixing. From the analysis conducted on Code sourcing and the Code mixing on “Hitam Putih” talkshow, August 2015 edition, concluded that the exernal transfer code ie rather code that occurred from Indonesian to English in the form of the insertion of words, phrases, and sentences. The form and meaning of the code switching and code mixing in the form of shaped insertion elements; (a) the word, (b) the phrase, (c) or looping reduplications word, (d) idiom or expression, and (e) affixes, such as; prefix + suffix + basic words and basic words. Abstract

ABSTRACT This research, entitled “Analisis Karakter Utama dalam Novel If I Stay Karya Gyle Forman”, is intended to give explanation about the main character namely Mia Hall as portrayed in the novel. The objectives of this research are to identify and analyze Mia Hall’s character, using Stanton’s theory. Stanton suggests the four specific ways on how to analyze a character: they are what the character says and thinks, what the character does, interactions among characters, and action. The methodology used consists of three phases namely; preparation, data collection, and data analysis. The data were taken from Gyle Forman’s novel and analyzed using intrinsic approach to describe Mia Hall’s character. The research findings show that Mia Hall’s character is portrayed in the novel as being frustrated, panic, sad, hopeless, helpless, but at the same time she is full of love. All this is depicted through her expressions, action and dialogue, as well as their interaction among characters in the novel.   Keywords: Analysis main character,Gyle Forman, Mia Hall, Stanton.

Abstract

ABSTRACT The title of this study is “Perubahan Bunyi Dalam Soneta Shakespeare ke Bahasa Inggris Modern”. The purpose is intended to give explanation about the sound changing from Early Modern English (in this case, Shakespeare’s sonnet) to Modern English. The objectives of this research are to identify, analyze, and explain the sound changing from Shakespeare’s sonnets to Modern English. The research uses a descriptive method. There are three steps to finish this research: Preparation, Data Collection, and Data Analysis. The data were taken through the sonnets of William Shakespeare. Ten sonnets had been selected to be identified. Theory of Campbell  (1999: 31-42) is used to analyze the data. The result of this research shows that there are six kinds of sound changes. Those are palatalisation, non palatalisation, strenghtening, weakening, centering vowel, and apocope.   Keywords: Early Modern English, sonnet, Shakespeare, sound change, Modern English

Abstract

ABSTRACT Problems There are two kinds of discourse, verbal and nonverbal, used in the daily activities. Verbal or interactive discourse is produced from communication process between speaker and hearer. The art of choosing a word that used in the discourse is based on the way of the writer. The words exist it the decease news of Kompas newspaper has informative discourse. Aim of the Research The aim of this research is to describe the discourse structure and the word choosing of decease news of Kompas newspaper has informative discourse. Method The writer used descriptive because the data were collected, analyzed and presented as they were. In the method application, technique is used to applied the method. Techniques used were population, sample, data providing method, data analysis technique, and data analysis  presentation.   Conclusion It can be concluded that the discourse structure in the decease news of the Kompas newspaper divided into three parts, they are; head of discourse, body of discourse, and closing. Head of discourse is functioned as introduction; body of discourse is functioned as information of the identity of the late person, time, and place of funeral; finally,  the closing part of the discourse informed the families that left. The writer also concluded that there were words choosing by the provider such as bapa and rahmatullah, belasungkawa, berpulang, dikremasi, dikebumikan, disemayamkan, telah, and jenazah. In the discourse of advertisement, decease news used euphemism to express the feeling instead of words that consider as rough in daily used. The words like mati replaced by meninggal dunia, of wafat that softer that previous one.   Keywords: discourse analysis, words, decease news, kompas

Abstract

ABSTRACT Every word in the sentence has three classifications namely, syntactic category, syntactic functions and semantic roles. This research is related to the verb in the language Galela. This in the syntactic category serves as predicate verbs that require many types of arguments that must be present in the verb construction. Verb arguments it is located can be moved, that means the position of verbs in Galela not rigid in the sentence. On the role of semantic diverse grouping is applied, used nine kinds of semantic roles among actors, goals, experience, luck, place, tools, time, attributes and results. This study uses Sudaryanto (1993 ), data used in this study were taken from written sources of the biblical book Galela language, all of which are written using language Galela. Abstract

A B S T R A C T Conjunction is a word used to connect words, phrases and clauses. Conjunction shows the relationship between sentence elements that they connect. This study is an attempt to describe and analyze the conjunction in the novel “Pride and Prejudice” written by Jane Austen. The writer analyzed and classified these conjunctions according to their types and functions which the data have been taken from the novel. This investigation has been done through bibliography research and it used the concept of Aarts and Aarts. The results showed that there are three kinds of conjunction in the novel “Pride and Prejudice”, they are coordinating conjunctions, subordinating conjunctions and correlative conjunctions. The coordinating conjunction can link two words ‘they are silly and ignorant like other girls’, two phrases ‘her ease and good spirits increased’ and two clauses ‘jumping after stiles and springing over puddles’. The subordinating conjunction can link a clause with another clause or other constituents in a sentence ‘I had hope that our sentiments coincided’, and the correlative conjunction are coordinating words that work in pairs to join words ‘neither Jane nor Elizabeth’, phrases ‘can tell us whether it is like or not’ and clauses ‘she was perfect either making some inquiry, or looking at his page’, or whole sentence. It is expected that this study can be continued by students of English Department and those who are interest in learning one of the aspects of English, in this case conjunction.
