Abstract

ABSTRACT                       This research is entitled “An Analysis of Adverbial Phrases on National Geographic Magazine” is the requirement to accomplish the Bachelor Degree in English Linguistic at Faculty of Humanities, Sam Ratulangi University. This research aims at identifying, classifying and analyzing the kinds and internal functions of adverbial phrase which found in National Geographic Magazine.            The theory that is used in this research by Aarts and Aarts (1982). Moreover, the method used in this study is descriptive method. The data of analysis of adverbial phrases is taken from the sentences in the article entitled Gilles de Rais: Making a Murderer of National Geographic Magazine edition November 2017.            The results of this research show that from 56 kinds of adverbial, adverb of place (11 data), adverb of time (9 data), intensifying adverb and adverbs of degree (19 data), conjuncts (3 data), other adverbs (7 data), premodifier in the adjective phrase and adverbial phrase (2 data), premodifier in a noun phrase (1 data), postmodifier in a noun phrase (3 data), adverb premodify by preposition (1 data), and from internal functions there are 4 data such as premodifiers (3 data), postmodifier (1 data).Keywords:  Analysis, Adverbial phrases, National Geographic, Magazine

Abstract

ABSTRACT            This study is entitled “The Use of Apposition in The Book of Isaiah (A Syntactic Analysis)”. The aims of this study is an attempt to identify, classify and analyze the function of apposition found in the book of Isaiah. The data were taken from the book of Isaiah based on the Holy Bible New International Version.            The method used in this study is descriptive method. There are three steps to finish this study, those are preparation, the writer reads some concepts related to the title about apposition and also browse resources from internet to find journal and skripsi. The second step is data collection. In collecting the data the writer read the book of Isaiah in order to identify and underline the use of apposition. After identifying the writer classifies the apposition based on the concept of Quirk et al. The third step is data analysis. The data were analyzed in term of the function using Aarts and Aarts theory.            The results of this study shows that there are fifty four appositions found in the book of Isaiah. Concerning types of apposition, they are : 1)Full, Strict and Non-restrictive Apposition; 2)Full, Strict and Restrictive Apposition; 3)Full, Weak and Restrictive Apposition; 4)Partial, Strict and Non-restrictive Appostion; 5)Partial, Weak and Non-restrictive apposition; 6)Partial, Strict and Restrictive Apposition; 7)Partial, Weak and Restrictive Apposition. Regarding the function of apposition found in the book of Isaiah, they are: 1)Subject; 2)Direct Object; 3)Subject Attribute; 4)Object Attribute and 5)Adverbial. Key Words: Syntax, Apposition. Abstract

ABSTRACT This research is entitled “Penolakan Peter Pan untuk menjadi dewasa dalam novel Peter and Wendy karya J.M Barrie” is written to fullfil the requirement of accomplishing bachelor’s degree in English Department Faculty of Humanities Sam Ratulangi university. The focus of this research is Peter Pan’s rejection in the novel.The writer use theory from Leary (2001) to analyze rejection in the novel. This research also  include reason and impact of the rejection. The writer use extrinsic approach to discuss about relation of psychology and literary to identify, analyze, and describe about Peter Pan’s rejection who portrayed in the novel Peter and Wendy and to analyze the impact of Peter Pan’s rejection.The result of this research is Peter Pan’s rejection for being mature is also relate to his past, before he live with the fairies. Peter Pan’s rejection about maturation in this is portrayed with the other character. From the rejection for being mature, the writer find six impact from the rejection.Keywords: Character, Rejection, Peter Pan’s Rejection

Abstract

ABSTRACTThis research entitled ?the Function of Subject in the Book of Genesis? aims at identifying and classifying the functions subject and analyzing the realizations of functions subject.The method of this research is descriptive method. There are three steps to finish this research. First step is preparation, the writer reads the book of Genesis and several books that are related to this research. Second step is data collection, the writer collected the data from the book of Genesis then the writer identified and classified the functions subject according to the theory of Aarts and Aarts (1982). Third step the data were analyzed in terms of the realizations of functions subject, used the theory of Aarts and Aarts (1982).The results of this research shows that: first, there are four criteria of functions subject found in this book, those are Position (28 data), Concord (28 data), Passivization (4 data) and Repetition in tag-questions (1 data). Furthermore, there are six realizations of function subject found in this book, those are Noun Phrase (25 data), Finite Clause (4 data), Non-Finite Clause (3 data), Anticipatory It + Finite/Non-Finite Clause (1 data), Unstressed There (7 data) and Prepositional Phrase (5 data) found in the book of Genesis. Keywords: Function Subject; book of Genesis, Syntax; Aarts and Aarts.

Abstract

ABSTRACT                             This researchentitled “Grammatical and Lexical Cohesion in Malala Yousafzai’s Speech: “The Pen is Mightier than Sword” is the requirement to accomplish the Bachelor Degree at Faculty of Humanities, Sam Ratulangi University. The objectives of this research are to identify, classify, and analyze descriptively the aspects of grammatical and lexical cohesion on the text of Malala Yousafzai’s speech. The theory used in this research is from Halliday and Hasan (1976). The theory focused on the aspects of grammatical and lexical cohesion.The grammatical cohesion consisted of reference(personal, demonstrative, interrogative pronoun), substitution, ellipsis, and conjunction.  The lexical cohesion consisted of reiteration (repetition, synonym, antonym, hyponym, meronymy) and collocation. The text of speech is taken from the internet at www.theirworld.org and other relevant source from internet as a source data.The result of this research shows that there are 102 pronouns which consist of 79 personal pronouns, 10 demonstrative pronouns, 13 interrogative pronouns, and there are 5 subtitusions, 83 conjuctions consist of 62 additive conjunctions, 5 adversative conjunctions, 8 causal conjunctions, 8 temporal conjunctions, and also in lexical cohesion there are 11 repetition, 16 synonym, 4 antonym, 1 hyponym, 3 meronymy, 5 collocation. Abstract

ABSTRACTThis research entitled “Alienation as reflected on Charles Dickens’s Hard Times” is written to find out the phenomena of alienation. Alienation is a big issue in society and personality. The problem to be researched is how the characteristic of Alienation revealed in the novel Hard times. The objective of this research is to identify, classify and analyze the phenomena of alienation revealed through the perspective of character. This is a qualitative research with descriptive method. To identify and classify the types of Alienation on this novel, researcher uses the theory from Karl Marx, where he categorizes alienation into four types; they are alienation from product, from work, from their self and from another man. Then Robert’s character analysis is used to reflect each phenomena of Alienation found of this novel base on the perspective of character and author’s narration.The result of this research reveals that the type of alienation which commonly appears in novel is the alienation from work. Two of the main character Louisa and Thomas Gradgrind Jr. experience alienation because they was forced by people around them to do something that they do not want. Most of the Alienation found trough the statement from other character.   They define, force and dictate others to do or behave base on their will. Like shown by Josiah Bounderby and Thomas Gradgrind toward their family and friends. Key Words: Alienation, Novel and Character.

Abstract

ABSTRACT The research which entitled, “Verbs in English and Konjo Language: A Contrastive Analysis” aims at classifying, identifying and analyzing the kinds of verbs in these two languages and finding out the similarities and differences between both languages.  The English data have been collected from English books “Modern English” by Marcella Frank 1972 and the articles on internet, whereas the data of Konjo Language have been collected from informants.  In English, the kinds of verbs may be classified by complement of verb and form of verb involves predicating or linking verbs, transitive or intransitive verbs, reflexive verbs, auxiliary or lexical verbs and finite or non-finite verbs and in Konjo language it concerns predicating or linking verbs, transitive or intransitive verbs and lexical verbs. Theoretically, this research gives contribution toward the knowledge development in contrastive analysis especially verbs in English and Konjo language. Abstract

ABSTRACT This research entitled ‘Prinsip-prinsip Kesopanan dalam Film The Help Karya Tate Taylor : Suatu Analisis Pragmatik’ focuses on maxim related to the politeness principles. The aims of this research is to identify, classify and analyze the politeness principles and their function in The Help  movie.This research used a descriptive method. The data collected from conversation among characters, then classify and analyze them according to the concept of Leech (1983). The result shows that there are six maxims of politeness and their function  applied by the characters in their dialogues. First, tact maxim consist  of 17 utterances functioning to minimizes cost to other and maximizes benefit to the other. Second, generosity maxim consist of 11 utterances functioning to minimizes benefit to self and maximizes cost to self. Third, approbation maxim consist of 21 utterances functioning to minimizes dispraise of other and maximizes praise of other. Fourth, modesty maxim consist of 9 utterances functioning to minimizes praise of self and maximizes dispraise of self. Fifth, agreement maxim consist of 10 utterances functioning to maximizes agreement between self and other and minimizes disagreement between self and other. Sixth, sympathy maxim consist of 9 utterances functioning to minimizes antipathy between self and other and maximizes sympathy between self and other.
