Abstract

ABSTRACT This skripsi is entitled Term of address in the movie Ramona and Beezus directed by Elizabeth Allen (a sociolinguistic analysis). Term of address is the way someone gives address to other people in daily conversation, it also an important aspect in discourse which can not be avoided. The aims of this research are to classify and analyze the term of address in the movie of Ramona and Beezus directed by Elizabeth Allen. The writer uses descriptive method. There are three steps to finish this research. First step is preparation, the writer watched the movie of Ramona and Beezus to find out the data. Second step is data collection, the writer will identify the data by reading the script after downloaded from the internet and give a underline and then write down term of address in the piece of the paper. Third step is data analysis. In classifying and analyzing the data, the writer uses the theory of Ervin-Tripp (1971). The result of this research shows that there are 110 term of address used in the movie Ramona and Beezus directed by Elizabeth Allen. There are four types/Aspects of term of address and there were all term of address found in the movie, they are status, rank, identity, and degree of generation. How are their uses by the characters in the movie are 75 term of address according to the aspects of status, 3 term of address according to the aspects of rank, 6 term of address according to the aspects of identity, and 26 term of address according to the aspects of degree of generation.   Keywords : Term of address, Sociolinguistics Analysis, Movie Ramona and Beezus

Abstract

ABSTRACT This research is aimed to identify, classify and analyze imperative sentences in the Film “12 Years a Slave” especially about its forms and functions in communication. The data are taken from the film “12 Years a Slave” directed by Steve McQueen. The identification and classification of the data are based on Quirk & Greenbaum theory about forms of imperative sentence. Furthermore, there is an analysis of the data about functions of imperative sentence in communication using the theory of Aarts & Aarts.  In analyzing the data, the writer uses descriptive method. The problems of this research focus on the forms and functions of imperative sentence found in the film “12 Years a Slave”. The results of this research show that the all four kinds of forms in imperative sentence (commands without a subject, commands with a subject, commands with let, negative commands, and persuasive imperatives) are all can find in the film, and the writer also discovers a new form of imperative sentence that is used in the film which is commands using Adv & Adj. Additionally, the function of these imperative sentences found in the film are command, wish, invitation, and warning. This study concludes that the most used form in the film is commands without a subject and the most used function in the film is command. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Key words: Imperative Sentence, Forms and Functions, Film “12 Years a Slave.”

Abstract

ABSTRACT   Language is one of the most important characteristics of human behavior. In communication, people not only utter sentences but also transfer it into behavior and this is called speech act. According to Searle (1970:105), illocutionary act is divided into five categories; those are assertive, directive, commissive, expressive and declaratives. The purposes of this research are to identity, classify, and analyze the category of illocutionary and theory functions through utterances found in the film by The  Devil  Wears  Prada  by David Frankel. The collected data have been taken through the utterances that uttered by the characters and analyzed them descriptively based on the theory of Searle. The  research finding, it shows that there are five categories of illocutionary acts in that film. Those are assertive, directive, commissives, expressive and declarative. The functions of the category of illocutionary act found are asserting, complaining, requesting, begging, offering, thinking, and blooming, congratulations. This study is expected to give contribution to the language development in linguistic studies especially in analyzing illocutionary act through pragmatic analysis. Abstract

ABSTRACT This research is entitled ? The Function of Subject Used in the Speech San Bernardino Terror  Attack  and the War on ISIS by Barack Obama?. The objectives of  this research are to identify and classify the types of  functions subject and to analyze the realizations of  functions subject. This  research  uses  a  descriptive method. There are three steps to finish this research.  First step is preparation, the writer  reads the speech to find out the data. Second step is data collection. The writer collects the subject found in the speech  and  compares  them with the speech text then the writer identifies and classifies the kinds of  function subject  according to the theory of  Aarts and Aarts (1982).  Third step is data analysis, to analyze  the  data  about  the  realizations of  functions subject, the writer uses the theory from Aarts and Aarts (1982) to analyze  and  describe  the realizations of function subejct. The  result of  this  research:  First,  it  shows  that according to the theory of Aarts and Aarts (1982), there are four criteria of  functions subject, but there were only three criteria of  function  subject  found  in this speech, those are Position, Concord,  Passivization.  Furthermore, the   six realizations  of  function subject, those are  Noun Phrase,  Finite Clause, Non- Finite Clause, Anticipatory it + Finite/Non-Finite  Clause, Unstressed  there in existential    sentences, and Prepositional Phrase found  in the speech  San Bernardino Terror  Attack  and the War On ISIS.  The   findings of  this  research support  the  theory  of  Aarts and Aarts (1982).   Keywords: Function Subject; Obama?s Speech, Syntax; Aarts and Aarts

Abstract

ABSTRACT   This skripsi is made as a requirement to obtain bachelor Degree in English in Sam Ratulangi University. This research entitled “The Cohesion and Coherence of Speech at “APEC CEO SUMMIT 2014” by Joko Widodo. It is attempt to analyze and explain the cohesion and coherence items in Joko Widodo speech. There are three steps to finish this research. First step is preparation, the writer finds the speech of Joko Widodo, she also reads some books about language, linguistics, discourse analysis, relevant theories, and  articles from internet which relevant to the topic of this study. Second step is data collection, the writer downloads the speech of Joko Widodo “APEC CEO SUMMIT 2014” from www.englishindo.com, reads the speech for several times to have deeper understanding and identifies the items according to theory of Juez  (2009). Third step is data analysis. The method used in this research is taken from Alba-Juez (2009) and supported by the theory of Halliday & Hassan (1976) and Aarts and Aarts ((1982). The theory consists of Cohesion: pronoun, substitution, ellipsis, conjunction, lexical, and Coherence: marked coherence and unmarked coherence. The result of this research shows that in cohesion there are 112 pronouns, 6 substitutions, 1 ellipsis, 6 conjunctions, 14 lexical cohesions. In this speech, there are 22 marked coherence and there is no unmarked coherence. Keywords: discourse analysis, speech, cohesion and coherence, Joko Widodo

Abstract

ABSTRACT The title of this study is adverb of frequency in English and Tondano language. The aims of this study is an attempt to identify, to analyze, and to describe about the form, position and meaning in English and Tondano language and to find out the similarities and differences of both languages by using the theory of Lyons (1975:325-326), Michael Swan (2005:16-23) and Murthy (1998:180-181) In this study, the English data was taken from some English Linguistics and grammar books and the Tondano language was taken by interviewing some informants. The method that has been applied in this study is contrastive analysis. The data of this study was analyzed descriptively. The result of this study shows that both languages have differences and similarities. Based on forms, the adverbs of frequency in both languages are bound and free forms, based on their positions they are in front, middle and end positions. The meaning of both languages are just the same that describe how often an action is performed. The differences of these languages are found in the forms, positons and meaning. The adverbs of frequency in English language are formed by adding clitics {-ly} and in Tondano language are formed by adding affix {-i} and clitics {-la}, {-mou} and {-te}. The positions of adverb of frequency in English language are found in front, middle and end positions whereas in Tondano language are only in the front and middle positions.   Keywords: adverb of frequency, contrastive analysis, English, Tondano, language.

Abstract

ABSTRACT This research entitled “Types of Meaning in the Book of Proverbs.” The problems of this research focus on the seven types of meaning and their descriptions in the Book of Proverbs. The aims of the research are to identify, to classify the verses into the seven types of meanings, and to analyze the verses in the Book of Proverbs using Semantics approach. This research uses descriptive method. In collecting data, the writer focused on reading the words, phrases, or sentences in every verse from chapter 1-15 because the whole 7 types of meaning exist in chapter 1-15. The result of this research showed that there are conceptual meaning, connotative meaning, collocative meaning, reflective meaning, affective meaning, social meaning, and thematic meaning in the Book of Proverbs. The second result of this research is the seven types of meaning have variation in their descriptions.   Keywords: Types, Meaning, Book of Proverbs

Abstract

ABSTRACT     This skripsi is entitled Subtitutions in the Poems of Carl Sandburg; A Syntactical Analysis. Substitution is useful to avoid the repetition that makes a sentence too long or boring. It can also help the readers to understand the sentences correctly.   The aims of this research are to identify, classify the kinds of substitutions and analyse their functions in the poems of Carl Sandburg. The writer uses descriptive method. There are three steps to finish this research. First step is preparation, the writer read the poems of Carl Sandburg to find out the data. Second step is data collection, the writer read again the poems to get more accurate data, coloring and underline them, write them on a piece of paper and then numbering the data. Third step is data analysis. In classifying and analyzing the data, the writer uses the theory of Aarts and Aarts (1982).   The result of this research shows that there are 84 substitutions used in the poems of Carl Sandburg. There are five kinds of subtitutions but there were only four substitutions found in the poems, those are noun phrase, verb phrase, a clause and adverbial expressions of place and time. The functions of substitutions which found in this poems are 67 substitutions to replace noun phrase, 4 substitutions to replace verb phrase, 7 substitutions to replace clause and 6 substitutions to replace adverbial of time and place.       Keywords: Substitutions; Poems of Carl Sandburg, Aarts and Aarts, Syntactical Analysis.
