Abstract

ABSTRACT This research is entitled “Lexical Relations and Meaning Properties in The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel Movie Script”. The objectives of this research are to describe the types of lexical relations and meaning properties and to analyze which type of lexical relations and meaning properties that occur the most in the movie script. This research uses a descriptive method. There are three steps to finish this research, the first step is preparation. In this step, the writer watches the movie to find out the data. The second step is data collection. The writer collects the words that include in lexical relations and meaning properties and compares them with the movie script. The third step is data analysis. The writer describes and classifies the types of lexical relations according to Palmer’s (1976:57-81) theory and meaning properties according to Leech’s (1981:29) theory, then the writer uses formula to get the types that occur the most in the movie script. The results of this research show that there are 72 data include in lexical relations and 107 data include in meaning properties. All of the words according to Palmer’s (1976:57-81) and Leech’s (1981:29) theory are found in this movie. The lexical relations and meaning properties found in the movie script of The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel are 3 data or 5 % of hyponym, 11 data or 19 % of synonym, 23 data or 39 % of antonym, 20 data or 34 % of polysemy, 2 data or 3,3 % of homonym, 103 data or 96 % of meaningfulness, 0 data or 0% of anomaly, 0 data or 0 % of contradictory, 4 data or 3,5% of ambiguity, and 0 data or 0 % of redundancy. It also shows that the types that occur the most are antonym and meaningfulness. Abstract

ABSTRACT Speech act is an pragmatics element which involve the speaker, hearer, writer, reader, and the topic. Speech act is a psychology speech from the action and the meaning point of view. It is an identity which play a central role in pragmatics. It is also can be seen the daily activities which has a close relation to a speech act communication in society, public and social. Novel is a prose fiction work that composed in the form of a story. It is a form and result of a creative work and it also uses language in revealing the human life.Pragmatics is a study of meaning in the relation with the speech situations. The aim of this research are to identify the values and to describe the form of speech act which can be found in the  novel ‘Ayat-Ayat  Cinta’. This research hopefully can enrich the knowledge of the readers in pragmatics aspects of novel and can be the reference for other writers who are eager to write other aspect of pragmatics speech acts. Abstract

ABSTRACT This research is entitled “Lexical Taxonomy of Food in English and Sundanese (A Contrastive Analysis)”. The objectives of this research are to identify, classify and describe the lexical taxonomy of food and to analyze the similarities and differences of food taxonomy used in both languages. This research uses a descriptive method. There are three steps to finish this research, the first step is preparation. In this step, the writer reads some books about lexical taxonomy. The second step is data collection. In this step, the writer collets the kinds of food that include in lexical taxonomy in English and Sundanese. The third step is data analysis. In this step, the writer identifies, classifies, and describes the data about lexical taxonomy in English and Sundanese according to Frisch in Hickerson (1980:120) theory and then the writer uses Lado’s (1957:114) theory to contrast the data of both languages. The results show that in solid and liquid foods, there are several types of food, such as: rice, fruits, vegetables, bread, meat, fish/seafood, processed food, alcoholic beverages and non-alcoholic beverages. The second results show that the lexical taxonomy of food has variation. For example, in English, the variety of food is bread and in Sundanese the variety of food is rice, because bread and rice are the main food. Whereas, the lack variety of food is tuak, because it only has one kind of alcoholic drink. The findings of this research support the theory of Frisch in Hickerson and Lado. Abstract

ABSTRACT This research is entitled “Ujaran dan Gerakan Tubuh dalam Mengekspresikan Kemarahan dalam Film The Hunger Games Trilogi oleh Suzanne Collins”. Facial emotion and tone of the speech play a major role in expressing these emotions, like sadness, angry, happiness, and disgust, while body movement is the act of generating the information such as facial expression, posture, and gesture. Based on this background, the writer is able to formulate this problem is what kinds of body movements that are used to accompany the speech production of anger in the movie The Hunger Games Trilogy. This objective of research is to analyze the speech and body movements in expressing anger in the movie The Hunger Games Trilogy. This research focuses on the film The Hunger Games Trilogy which consists in three parts. They are The Hunger Games, Catching Fire, and Mockingjay. The research uses descriptive approach in order to find out the speech production and body movements in expressing anger support by Thompson and Yule’s Theory. The result of this research shows that there are some speeches and body movements which found in expressing anger such as abuse while throwing something by body movement of hands, shout while body movement of pointing the finger, say in harsh manner while body movement of push by hands or foots, and shout while body movement show knife or something by body movement of hands.   Keywords: Speech, Body Movements, Expression, Anger, The Hunger Games Trilogy, Psycholinguistic Analysis

Abstract

ABSTRACT This research entitled Phonological Variation of Black American English in the Songs of Alicia Keys, and focuses on Alicia Keys’s fifth album, ‘The Diary of Alicia Keys’. Black American English is a unique English varieties that growing in the black Americans society, it have a different grammar and pronounce. This research is conducted by using a descriptive method. In collecting data, the first thing that the writer do is taking the lyrics from internet. Then, identifies those words that contains this variation. In analyzing data, the writer uses the theory of Rickford (1999) about phonological features of African American Vernacular English. The result of this research shows that there are some variations of African American Vernacular English in the songs of Alicia Keys, especially in the album ‘The Diary of Alicia Keys’. Such as: Reduction of word final consonants clusters, especially those ending in t and the –ed suffix pronounced as /t/, Deletion of word-final single consonant, Realization of final ng /ŋ/ as n /n/, Realization of voiceless th /θ/ as t, Realization of voiced /ð/ as d, Deletion or vocalization of l after a vowel, Deletion or vocalization of r after a vowel, Deletion of initial d and g in certain tense-aspect auxiliaries, Deletion of unstressed initial, Monophthongal pronunciation of ay, and ey, Most of the songs that sings by a black people have a different variation because their daily activities. The writer hopes that this study would give more knowledge to the readers in understanding the phonological variations of the Black American English, in the Faculty of Humanity, Sam Ratulangi University, Manado.   Keywords: The Phonological Variations, Black American English/African American Vernacular English

Abstract

ABSTRACT Language is a system of utterance sound symbols used to communicate among the user community. A good language develops based on a system which a set rules obeyed by the users. The term interference was used first by Weinrich (1953) to explain the system changing of a language related to the contiguity of its language with the elements used by bilingual speaker (Chaer and Agustina, 2004:120) Interference means the existence of the deviation or inter language effect. The effect is in the form of the simplest which taking one of the language elements in the relation with other language (Aslinda, 2007:66). Tobelo community is a region who loves the culture or even the dialect sound difference because when they are talking the language inserted with Galela language. The Tobelo community considered as bilingual because they mastered more than one language, it is called interference. Etymologically, the word phonology derives from the combination of the word  phone which means sound and logywhich means science. Phonologygenerally explains as the basic part in linguistics research hierarchy which learn, discuss, talk, and analyze the sound of language produced by the human vocal cord (Chaer, 2009:1). Phonology is divided into two parts which are phonetics and phonemics. Generally, phonetics can be describe as phonology branch  that research the language sounds without focus on the status, whether the language sounds can differentiate the meaning (words) or not. While phonemics is a branch of phonology research that focus on the language sound that the function as the meaning difference (word) (Chaer, 2009:3) Based on the research, the writer found four factors as the causes of the interference in Tobelo community. They are the bilingual speaker, the presence of mother tongue, geographic location, and mix marriage.

Abstract

ABSTRACT The objectives to be achieved in this research are: (1) describe the sociological aspects of literary mimesis in novel Detik Terakhir, in terms of character and characterization, social status, the behavior of the characters, and events that occur in Novel. (2) The extent to which the involvement of the author in the novel Detik Terakhir. This study is a review of sociology of literature using qualitative methods. Research techniques include the stage of data collection, data analysis, data presentation, and conclusion. The data source consists of primary data (novel Detik Terakhir) and a secondary form books of literature and other sources. The results Showed that the sociological aspects of mimesis in the novel Detik Terakhir is a clone of the state of young people today, where many young people are caught in the vortex of drugs as a form of escape from the problems that they face . While the implications of authorship or involvement of the author in the novel Detik Terakhir includes pouring her heart by concern over the unpreparedness of the family and the environment in receiving back a family member who has been rehabilitated drug.
