Abstract

ABSTRACT The research is entitled Coherence in the Book of Mormon Chapter 1 to 9. It is an attempt to anlyze and explain the items of coherence. The objectives of this research is to identify, classify, and analyze the items of coherence in the Book of Mormon Chapter 1 to 9 The writer conducts this research by using descriptive method. The data were taken from the Book of Mormon chapter 1 to 9 and analyzed based on Juez’ (2008). The findings show that there are 79 marked coherence ( 26 words of addition, 20 words of casuality, 2 words of condition, 24 words of instrument, 3 words of tempo, 4 words of intensity ) but there is no marked coherence on contrast, conclusion, comparison, similiar, and validitation. In addition unmarked coherence is not found in the data. Keywords : Discourse Analysis, The Book of Mormon., Coherence Items

Abstract

ABSTRACT This research is entitled “Dampak Penggunaan Game Online Terhadap Pembelajaran Bahasa Inggris (Ditinjau dari Persepsi Mahasiswa)”. The objectives of this research are to identify and analyze the impacts and learning strategy by using online gaming in learning English based on (Cohen and Chamot’s in Hinkel, 2011) theory. The learning strategies based on the function are metacognition, cognition, affection, social and based on the application are listening, speaking, writing, and reading skills. The writer uses qualitative methods in order to find out students’ perception about the impacts and learning strategies of using online gaming in learning English. The social situation in this research is the students in English Department at the Faculty of Humanities. The writer took 11 students who use online gaming as the data of this research. The instruments of this research are interview and semi-structured question. The results of this research showed that there are some negative and positive impacts of using online gaming in learning English according to students’ perception. Besides, there are also the learning strategies that the students uses for increasing their ability in learning English skills they are metacognition, cognition, affection, and social. This is research supports Cohen and Chamot theory about the learning strategies of using online gaming in learning English.   Keyword: Impact, Learning Strategy, Perception, Online Gaming, Learning English

Abstract

ABSTRACT This study entitiles “Analisis Semiotika Representamen dalam Novel Hallowe’en Party Karya Agatha Christie”. Semiotis is a study about signs. The Representamen signs is one of the triadic concepts. Daily activity can be divided into Representamen signs. This study is an attempt to identify, classify, and analyze the sign of Representamen contained in the novel. The data are collected through the writer’s explanation about the Representamen as a conduit of information. The writer uses theory of Peirce to identify and classify the data. In analyzing the data, the writer used the theory of Bathes which states that connotation is a new meaning that gives user the sign in accordance with wishes, background of knowledge, or a new convention that exists in a society. The results of this theory show that based on the theory of Peirce there are three form of Representamen contained in the novel. Those are Qualisgn, Sinsign, and Legisign. The meanings contained in the sign of Representamen are so many such as thinking, caring, confusion, frustration, fear, worry, affection, doubt, murderer, feeling guilty, shockness, warning and anger. The writer hopes that this study will hep the reader in understanding about semiotic study especially Representamen as one of the triadic concept and how it works in life.  Keywords : Semiotics, Representamen, triadic concept, Novel Hallowe’en Party

Abstract

ABSTRACT The research is entitled “Analisis Karakter Tokoh Utama dalam Novel Lolita Karya Vladimir Nabokov” is a skripsi which is to fulfill of the requirements to achieve the title of Sarjana Sastra. There are two problems to answer, those are : “what are the main charactes of Humbert Humbert described in the novel and what are the factors which affect the development of the main character Humbert Humbert. The writer has focused on the dialog through the characters and narrator’s description of the action in the narrative of the story. The writer used the theory of Robert’s (1983) about character. In identifying and analyzing the character the writer used the theory of Welleck and Warren (1976) to describe the leading factors development of the main character. The writer also used the intrinsic approach to analyze the interrelation between the characters in the characters in the novel that is to evaluated the characters by his words, what he is thinking and doing, and from what is the author said about them. The result of this research shows that the main character has several unique characters namely imajinative, polite, posesive, clever, calm, and economical. It also shows development of the main character in the novel that is influenced by the main character’s inner factors (past, self-control, love) and the outer factors (informations and books).   Keyword : Characters, Leading Factors, Novel Lolita.

Abstract

ABSTRACT This research, entitled “An Error Analysis of Simple Past Tense in Students’journals: A case study in Written English II” is an attempt to identify, classify and analyze the kinds of errors in the use of simple past tense in students’ journals  in written English II class. This research expected to help in developing language learning process and to give information in order to increase knowledge to understand errors made in the usage of simple past tense This research used a qualitative approach which has been done in several stages: preparation was made by reading the theory about simple past tense and the previous studies related to this research. Ellis’s theory is used to explain how to analyze the use of simple  past tense by students in written English II class. Data was taken from  students in written English II class uses test which given by the teacher to the students to make a journal. The writer use some techniques of analyzing the data,as follows: Identification of error, Classification, Description,and Correction. The result of this research shows that there are three kinds of errors made by students; there are omission, misinformation and misordering. All the errors are generally caused by the lack of students‘ ability of using the right English sentence patterns. The students can make the sentences but they do not know the correct patterns. Key word: simple past tense, error analysis, omission, misinformation and misordering.

Abstract

ABSTRACT   The research is entitled “Analisis Karakter dalam Novel Fifty Shades Darker oleh EL. James”. There are two main problems o be analyzed those are; “what are characters of the main characters as revealed in Fifty Shades Darker” and “How is the method of characterization applied in the novel”. This research only focuses on the two main characters Anastasia Steele and Christian Grey. The purpose of this research are to identify human characters, to analyze and describe the characterization. In identifying characters, the writer used Roberts’ theory about characters, in analyzing and describing the characterization, the writer used Perrine’s theory about direct presentation and indirect presentation. The result of this research show that there are several human character found in the novel such as Tough, plain, shy, emotional, sensual, firm, fragile, romantic, overt, honest etc. The method of characterization found in this novel can be divided in two types: direct presentation and indirect presentation.   Keywords: Character analysis, Fifty Shades Darker, Intrinsic Approach.
