Abstract

ABSTRACT   As the requirement to accomplish the Sarjana Degree at the Faculty of Humanities Sam Ratulangi University Manado, this research entitled “expressive act in the Film Freedom Writer by Erin Gruwell” is intended. The focus of this skripsi is on expressive act analysis following the theory of Searle (1979) who divides expressive act into six categories and functions: apologizing, pardoning, praising, thanking, congratulating and condoling. The aims of this analysis are to categorize expressive act and to analyze its functions in the script of the film Freedom Writer by Erin Gruwell. The descriptive method is used in this research the data are categorized and analyzed by using the theory by Searle (1979). The result of this skripsi shows that the functions of expressive acts in the film Freedom Writer by Erin Gruwell are: apologizing, pardoning, praising, thanking, congratulating and condoling.

Abstract

ABSTRACT This skripsientitled Code Switching in Indonesian Artist: Sociolinguistic Analysis. The aim of this research is to identify, analyze and describe the code switching appeared in some Indonesian Artist Utterance and explain the reason for the phenomena mentioned above.   The theories that are used in this research are by Hoffman (1991) and Fishman (1876) and this research used a descriptive method. The data was taken from Youtube.   The result of this research shows that there are two kinds of code switching, Intra-sentential switching and Inter-sentential switching. The reasons of  the code switching in artist through its speaker, listener or opponent saying, changing situations of the presence of the  third person, the formal changes into the informal, change of subject, and its prestigious.   Key Words: Sociolinguistic,  Code Switching, Youtube, Indonesian Artist

Abstract

ABSTRACTS   “Analisis Karakter Dalam Novel Breaking Dawn” is a skripsi which is to fulfill one of the requirements to achieve the title of Sarjana Sastra. There are two main problems to be analyzed; those are “how the characters are revealed in Breaking Dawn and “how the method of characterization is applied in the novel. The purpose of this research are to identify human characters, to analyze and describe the characterization. In identifying characters, the writer used Roberts’ theory about characters, in analyzing and describing the characterization, the writer used Perrine’s theory about direct presentation and indirect presentation. For analyzing the data the writer used descriptive method and intrinsic approach.   The results of this research show that there are several human characters found in the novel such as introvert, willing to sacrifice, calm, understanding, clever, wise, determinated, etc. The method of characterization found in this novel can be devided in two types: direct presentation and indirect presentation; these two types of presentation can be found in six characters in the novel, they are:  Isabella (Bella) Swan, Edward Cullen, Jacob Black, Charlie Swan, Jasper Hale and Garret.     Keywords: Characters, Method of characterization, Novel, “The Breaking Dawn”.

Abstract

ABSTRACT This research entitled “Tindakan Meminta dalam Novel Oliver Twist Karya Charles Dickens: Suatu Analisis Pragmatik” is focused on the one kinds of illocutionary act that is acts of requesting. The purpose of this research, is to identify, classify, analyze, and describe the aspect of act of requesting in the novel “Oliver Twist” by Charles Dickens, and is done by using descriptive method. In collecting data, the writer concentrated on the utterances which contain the act of requesting produced by the characters in novel. The collected data are analyzed based on Austin’s theory. The result shows that there are nine types of acts of requesting in the novel Oliver Twist, they are: ask, beg, command, demand, direct, inquire, order, pray, and request. It is expected that this research will help the students and the other readers in learning the pragmatics aspects, especially about illocutionary act. Keyword: Act of  Requesting, Illocutionary act, Pragmatics, Novel Oliver Twist.
