Abstract

ABSTRACT The Main Characters Dream in the Short Stories “ The Gentle boy” and “ The Ambitious Guest” is a skripsi which is to fulfill one of the requirements to achieve the title of Sarjana Sastra. There are two main problems to be analyzed; those are “what are the main characters dream in the short stories The Gentle Boy and The Ambitious Guest“ and “what are the leading factors that influence they dreams”. The purposes of this research are to identify and describecharacters dreams, to identify and describe the leading factors that influence their dreams and to compare their dreams. In identifying characters dream, the writer used Stantons’ theory through the intrinsic to analyzing the character, plot and setting, and for the analyzing data the writer used descriptive method and intrinsic approach. The result of this research show that there are two types to reach human dream, there are the dream that achieved with great effort and helps from the others and the dreams will not accompanied with effort or only false dream.   Keywords : Dreams, Intrinsic approach, Short Story, “The Gentle Boy” and “The Ambitious Guest”.

Abstract

ABSTRAK Penulisan ini mengambil topik tentang Sejarah Kelurahan Batulubang di Pulau Lembeh 2007-2015 . Dalam penulisan ini penulis menggunakan metode sejarah yang terdiri dari empat tahap, yaitu: heuristik, kritik analisa, interpretasi, dan tahap terakhir ialah historiografi. Selain penulis menggunakan metode sejarah, dalam hal ini penulis juga menggunakan ilmu sosial sebagai alat bantu untuk memungkinkan penganalisaan dan penginterpretasian yang lebih tajam untuk menjawab apa yang menjadi masalah dalam suatu penulisan. Kelurahan Batulubang merupakan Kelurahan yang cukup berkembang. Karena yang pertama kali yang masuk di desa Batulubang adalah masyarakat sangihe, setiap tahun perkembanganya sangat pesat karena disebabkan banyak pendatang yang awalnya menangkap ikan lama- kelamaan mereka mulai berdominsili di kelurahan Batulubang. jadi kelurahan Batulubang, merupakan suatu alasan bagi penulis untuk menulis sejarah perkembangannya. Melakukan identifikasi dan penelitian, penulis mendapat kesimpulan Kelurahan Batulubang awalnya adalah wilayah perkebunan. Kemudian masuk etnis Sangihe, dan Perkembangan selanjutnya pada bidang Pendidikan, tingkat kependudukan, Keadaan sosial dan Budaya. Kata Kunci : Perkembangan, Desa/Kelurahan, Batulubang di Pulau Lembeh 2007-2015

Abstract

ABSTRACT   The research is entitled Discourse Analysis of Martin Luther King Jr.’s speech, “I Have a Dream” (Addressed to the March on Washington). It is an attempt to analyzeand explain the discourse analysis norms. The objective of this research is to identify, classify, and analyze the discourse analysis norms in Martin Luther King Jr’s Speech. The writer conducts this research by using descriptive method. In collecting data, the speech and its history were taken from the book American  speech and other relevant source from internet as a source data. The data analysis was based on by Juez (2008:20) and supportedby De Beaugrande and Dressler (1986:8) and Aarts and Aarts (1982: 4).These discourse analysis norms were applied in the Martin Luther King Jr’s Speech. The theory consists of seven norms, they are: cohesion (pronoun, substitusion, ellipsis, conjuction, and lexical), coherence (mark coherence and unmark coherence), intentionality, acceptability, informatifity, situationality, and intertextuality. The result of this research shows that in the cohesion norm, there are 131 pronouns,  52 subtitusion, 1 ellipsis, 90 conjuction and 16 lexical. In coherence norm, there are 46  mark coherence and there is no unmark coherence. There are also others norms like intentionality, acceptability, informatifity, situationality, and intertextuality. Abstract

ABSTRACT   This skripsiwas made as a requirement to obtain bachelor Degree in English in Sam Ratulangi University. This research is entitled “Discourse analysis of King George VI Speech”With God’s Help, We shall Prevail”(First Radio Address, Britania. September 3, 1939)”. It is an attempt to analyze and explain the discourse analysis norms in King George VI speech. There are three steps to finish this research. First step is preparation,the writer reads some books about language, linguistics, and discourse analysis to find out the relevant theories.Second step is data collection, the writer finds King George VI speech and reads it for several times to have a deep understanding. Third step is data analysis,The data arecollected, identified, classified and analyzed. The method used in this research is taken from Alba-Juez (2008:20) and supported the theory by De Beaugrande and Dressler (1986:8) and Aarts and Aarts (1982: 4). The theory consists of seven norms, they are: Cohesion: pronoun, substitution, ellipsis, conjunction, lexical, Coherence: mark coherence, and unmark coherence, Intentionality, Acceptability, Informatifity, Situationality, and Intertextuality. The result of this research shows that in cohesion there are 50 pronouns, 7 subtitusion, no elipsis, 34 conjuction, 10 lexical. In this speech, there are 21 mark coherence and there is no unmark coherence. There are also the norms like intentionality is focused on user or producer by expressing a disappointment and sadness. Acceptabilityhas a generally acceptable meaning, according to the history of the text of this speech is received, the king get a warm welcome from the people and members of the royal. Informatifity is can provide full information,can be known through historical conditions occurred. Situationalityhas a relationship with the surrounding circumstances, refers to the situation of war. And intertextualityrefer to the agreement as a protector of the independence of Poland. Keywords: discourse analysis, speech, seven norms, King George VI

Abstract

ABSTRACT   This research attempts to identify and classify personal pronouns in English and Selaru language. The data are taken from interviewing some informants (native speakers) who was born in Selaru and understand the language and can interact effectively. The identified data are analyzed according to the concept of  Bloomfield and then contrast them by using Lado’s concept. In analyzing the data, the writer uses descriptive method. The problems of this research ore focused on what are the personal pronouns in terms of form and function in English and Selaru language and what are the similarities and differences of personal pronouns in terms of form and function in English and Selaru language. The aims of the research are to identify and classify personal pronouns in English and Selaru language and to find out the similarities as well as dissimilarities of personal pronouns in both languages in terms of form and function. The results of this research shows that English and Selaru language has similarities and dissimilarities. Similarities in English and Selaru language which has the form of the first person, second, third, both singular and plural and dissimilarities in English and Selaru language namely: in English has object, possessive pronoun and   third person singular neutral,whereas in selaru language not found. Abstract

Abstract The research is entitled “Code Mixing by The Indonesian Music Hosts On MTV”. It is an Attempt to analyze and explain the code mixing analysis in Hosts on MTV. The objective of this research is to identify, classify, and analyze the code mixing by the Indonesian music hosts on MTV. The writer conducts this research by using descriptive method. In collecting data, videos were taken from youtube as a source data. In analyzing data, the writer used theory by Hoffman (1991:116). The theory consists of ten reasons, they are: talking about a particular topic, quoting somebody else, being emphaty something (express solidarity), interjection (inserting sentence fillers or sentence connectors), repetition used for clarification, intention of clarifying the speech content for interlocutor, expressing group identity, to soften or strengthen request or command, because of real lexical need, to exclude other people when a comment is intended for only a limited audience. The result of this research shows that in code mixing there are 66 sentences by hosts on MTV programme by Hoffman theory (1991:116).   Keywords: sociolinguitics, code mixing, MTV (Music Television), hosts

Abstract

ABSTRACT   This study entitled The ‘Interrogative Sentence in The Novel The Guardian by Nicholas Sparks’ is aimed at identifying and analyzing the interrogative sentence found in the novel. The data have been collected by focusing on the conversation among the characters in the novel and analyzed them based on Aarts and Aarts concept. The result shows that interrogative sentence in English are three kinds those are yes/no question, question tag, wh-question. In this novel the author uses interrogative sentence without question word. Abstract

ABSTRACT   This study entitles “Analisis Tanda Tubuh dalam Novel The Hunger Games: Catching Fire Karya Suzanne Collins” . Semiotics is a study about signs. The signs of body are signs produced by, through, or that are in the body. The sign of body is one of nonverbal semiotic. Using the sign of body in communication is very important to support the delivery of verbal messages. This study is an attempt to identify, classify, and analyze the body sign contained in the novel. The data are collected  through the author’s explanation about the use of the body as a conduit of information. The writer uses theory of Danesi to identify and classify the data. In analyze the data, the writer used the theory of Barthes which states that connotation is a new meaning that gives user the sign in accordance with wishes, background of knowledge, or a new convention that exists in a society. The results of this research show that based on the theory of Danesi there are seven sign of body contained in the novel. Those are signals, facial expression, eye contact, body language, touch, gesture and dancing. The meanings contained in the signs of body are to attract attention, fear, worry, appreciation farewell, discomfort, pain, acting, lies, surprise, happiness, frustration, demand, shame, victory, relief, confusion, feeling guilty, resentment, understand each other, thinking, caring, vigilant, doubt, pride, the origins, state of the body, teasing, sadness, the event will begin, rebellion, refrain, affection, approval, admiration, gratitude, seriousness, providing support, warning, clear the mind, rejection, invitation, respect, ridicule and anger. The writer hopes that this study will help the reader in understanding about semiotic study especially sign of body as one of nonverbal sign and how it works in communication.
