Abstract

ABSTRACT This study entitled ‘Coherence in Steve Jobs Speech’ Coherence is a study about relation of meaning between sentence in the text, and coherence is one of the seven norms in discourse analysis. This study is attempt to identify, classify, and analyze the relation of meaning of coherence contained in the speech. The data collected, the writer reads the speech of Steve Jobs for several times deep understanding. The writer used the theory of Alba-Juez and supported the theory by Van Dijk the theory consist of coherence, mark coherence and unmark coherence. The result of this research shows that in marked coherence there are 139 pronouns, this marked coherence are as follow:  83 Addition, 14 Contrast, 4 Causality, 7 Condition, 11 Conclusion, 14 Tempo, 4 Intensity. And there is no unmarked coherence. This speech contains the coherence suggested by Juez (2008).   Keywords: discourse analysis, coherence, speech, Steve Jobs

Abstract

ABSTRACT Language has a crucial role in a human life’s communication since it functions as a media tool to make interaction. One way to establish a meaningful conversation in society is by applying politeness. Behaving politely does not merely depend on how good a member in a society is, but also how to behave politely in daily conversation. This study is about politeness strategies used by the main character in "V for Vendetta" movie. This study used a descriptive method specifically using document analysis. The writer analyzed the utterances of V as the main character taken from the script of V for Vendetta movie and the writer also adopted politeness strategy’s theory proposed by Leech (1983). The finding show that are six kinds of maxim politeness which arrange the utterances. Those are The tact maxim, The generosity maxim, The approbation maxim, The modesty maxim, The agreement maxim, and The sympathy maxim. The function of politeness strategies is to reduce various kinds of conflict. With the strategy of politeness everything can run smoothly without any conflict.   Key word         : Politeness Strategies, The Main Character, V for Vendetta Movie

Abstract

ABSTRACT The research is entitled Interrogative sentences in English  and Tehit language. This study is an attempt to describe and analyze the English and Tehit language which focuces on the interrogative sentences in relation to their form and function in both languanges based on Aarts and Aart’s theory and to contrast both language using by theory.   The English and Tehit Language are two languages from different language families. English is included in Indo-European and Tehit Language is included in Austronesian. Each of them has its own characteristics. The English data have been collected from books, whereas the data of Tehit language have been collected by interviewing some informants.   Then, the data are analyzed and described using contrastive analysis approach. The result shows that forms of interrogative sentences in English are yes-no question, tag question and interrogative-word question while in Tehit language has two forms namely interrogative word question and yes-no question. English and Tehit language have similarities, in the form of interrogative word question. The difference is in the placement of the word question: in English question word is at the beginning of sentence and Tehit language at the beginning and the end of sentence.   Keywords: Interrogative sentences, English and Tehit Language, Contrastive Analysis

Abstract

ABSTRAKTION In dieser Untersuchung wird ?ber den Prozess der Adjektivdeklination gesprochen. Die Untersuchung hat das Ziel um die Bildung der deutschen Adjektivdeklination zu identifizieren, zu klassifizieren, zu analysieren und zu beschreiben. Die Datenquelle wird aus den Jugendmagazine gesammelt. In diesem Fall verwendet der Untersucher die Morphosyntax und die deskriptive Methode, um die Daten zu analysieren. Als die theoretische Grundlage verwendet der Untersucher die Meinungen von Reimann (1996) und Nieder (1987). Nach Reimann bestehen die Arten der Adjektivdeklination aus der Adjektivdeklination nach bestimmter Artikel, nach unbestimmter Artikel und ohne Artikel. Nach Nieder kommt das Genusmerkmal des Nomens in jeder Nominalphrase gew?hnlich  einmal vor. Die Schl??folgerung der Untersuchung wird gezogen, da? die Arten der Adjektivdeklination im Jugendmagazin aus der Adjektivdeklination nach bestimmter Artikel, der Adjektivdeklination nach unbestimmter Artikel und der Adjektivdeklination ohne Artikel bestehen. Die Adjektivdeklination wird durch Genus (Geschlecht), Fall (Kasus) und Numerus (Zahl) gebildet.   Stichwörter : Adjektivdeklination, das Jugendmagazin, die Morphosyntax.

Abstract

ABSTRACT This skripsi is entitled "The Personal Pronoun of English and Klabra Language; “A Contrastive Analysis”. This study has the objective to identify, categorize and analyze the personal pronoun of English and Klabra language based on form, function and meaning. In addition to identifying and classifying the person pronouns of language, the study also aims to compare or contrast the similarities and differences between English and more particularly  personal pronouns of Klabra language which are based on the theory of Marcella Frank (1972:29).   There are two theories on personal pronouns used in this research, namely by Frank (1972: 29) and Bloomfield (1933). The English data were collected from English textbooks and some linguistic books, while the data about Klabra language were obtained from informants through telephone communications.   English is a member of the family of Germanic languages, derived directly from the Indo-European, whereas Klabra language is Austronesian language family. From the results of this study, it is found that the pronoun in English and Klabra language can be devided into the first personal pronoun, second and third. There are similarities and differences in the personal pronoun of English and Klabra language. There are several similarities in both languages, one of them is in the function as subject and object, and the two languages ​​have equal placement in the sentence that is before the verb and after the noun. There are many differences in both languages, one of them is English has one form of the second personal pronoun called you both singular and plular, whereas Klabra language has two forms, they are nin for the singular second personal pronoun and nan for the plural second personal pronoun. Abstract

ABSTRACT This research is aimed to identify, classify, and analyze the symbols in Tea Ceremony of Chinese Ethnic Marriage in Manado. The data were collected by getting some information from informants. The identification and classification of the data are based on Peirce theory about semiotics in this case symbol, and the analysis used is descriptive method using Leech’s meaning theory. The problems in this research what the verbal and non-verbal symbols are and what the meanings of those symbols in Tea Ceremony of Chinese Ethnic Marriage in Manado are. The result of the research show that there are 14 symbols such as character symbol, word symbol, sentence symbol, color symbol, tea symbol, dragon and phoenix symbol, peony flower  symbol, angpao symbol (red envelope symbol), two cups on the tray symbol, the respect symbol, giving the tea symbol, drink the tea together symbol, giving the angpao (red envelope) symbol, and giving the jewelry symbol. These symbols include verbal and non-verbal symbol and the meanings of these symbols are conseptual meaning and connotative meaning.   Keywords: Symbols, Verbal and Non-Verbal Symbols, Conseptual and Connotative      Meaning.

Abstract

ABSTRACTS Metaphor is a figurative language that takes two different things by identifying one with another. By using metaphor, it helps the speakers or the writers to give a clear description through comparison. This research aims at finding the metaphor in the novel The Notebook by Nicholas Sparks. The purpose of this research is to get the form of metaphor and the meaning of metaphor through sentences that had been analyzed. The data have been taken from the sentences from all pages of this novel; then they are identified in terms of their forms based on Wahab’s concept and analyzed by based on Bloomfield’s concept about metaphor. The method which is used for this study is descriptive method. In collecting the data, the writer focuses on identifying sentence, phrases, or words. The result shows that the forms of metaphors that the writer found are: Nominative subjective, nominative objective, and predicative metaphors. The result of this study shows that these metaphors contain a certain meaning depending on the sentences where the metaphors are located. ____________________________________________________________________ Key Words : Metaphors, Semantic Analyze, Novel : The Notebook.

Abstract

ABSTRACT This research aims to identify and classify the kinds of sign and to analyze the connotation meaning that can be found on perfume advertisements. This research uses Pierce’s theory based on its’ object which are icon, index and symbol and in interpreting the meaning uses the theory of semantic which is connotation meaning. The advertisement pictures are randomly collected through magazines and then searching along with internet on certain official website. The method of this research is descriptive method. Every perfume advertisement picture that had been selected is identified and classified into three kinds of sign which are icon, index and symbol and then analyzed the connotation meaning contained on the perfume advertisements. The result of this research shows that there are three kinds of sign that are found in perfume advertisements consisting of 20 icons, 27 indexes and 5 symbols and also every perfume advertisement has various meanings according to the wishes, background of knowledge and new convention that exist in a society.   Keyword: kinds of sign, connotation meaning, perfume advertisements, pictures
