Abstract

ABSTRACT This research is entitled “Conjunction in the Album Survival by Bob Marley and The Wailers”. Conjunction is a word used to connect words, phrases, and clauses. Conjunction shows the relationship between sentence elements that they connect. The purpose of this research is to describe, identify, and analyze the forms, functions, and meanings of conjunction in the songs of Bob Marley and The Wailers in the Album Survival (1979). The method used in this research is descriptive. The identification and classification of the data are based on  Payne (2011) and Algeo (2006) about forms and functions of the conjunction. Furthermore, there is an analysis of the data about meanings of conjunctions follows Hartford (2004) and ABA English (2014). The results show that the conjunctions found in the lyrics of the songs are: coordinate conjunctions and, but, for and coordinate conjunctions complex and then, and subordinate conjunctions are ‘cause, before, when, as, so, than, that, who, which, what, if, and no matter. The function of the coordinate conjunctions is to connect words, phrases, clauses and sentences, whereas the subordinate conjunctions are to connect clauses. The meaning of the conjunctions is as stated in the concepts used, they are in addition, time, contrast, result, purpose, etc. The investigation has been done through the library and field research. The data about conjunction in the songs are being collected from album Survival (1979) by Bob Marley and The Wailers. Abstract

ABSTRACT The research is entitled “Kecemasan dan Mekanisme Pertahanan diri Alice Howland dalam Novel Still Alice karya Lisa Genova”. There are fifteen characters in this novel but only the major character and her anxiety with defense mechanism that become the main focus in this  research. The main purpose of this research is to analyze Alice’s Anxiety and Defense mechanism that are shown in the novel. In terms of methodology, the combination of two approaches are applied namely the intrinsic and extrinsic ones. The theories by Robert Stanton (2007) and Edgard Robert (1964) are used to analyze the main character’s personality. Freud’s psychoanalysis is used to analyze the main character’s anxiety and defense mechanism, C. George Boeree’s book entitled Personality Theory (2006) are used in this research. The research uses descriptive method and the data were collected from the novel with supporting data from some articles on the internet about anxiety and defense mechanism. After analyzing the personality of the major character, the writer finds that Alice Howland has two types of anxiety that are neurotic anxiety and moral anxiety. Alice also has some defense mechanisms: which are projection, displacement, turning against the self, rationalization, denial, compensation, and reaction formation. Abstract

ABSTRACT This research which is entitled “Ironi dalam Novel Paper Towns, Karya John Green.” focuses on the types of irony reflected through the characters in the novel. The writer chooses this interesting novel because this novel is one of John Green’s works which achieved the New York Times bestseller for children's books and was awarded the 2009 Edgar Award for best young adult novel. A film adapted from this novel was released on July 24, 2015. The purpose of this study is to identify, analyze, and categorize the types of Irony in this novel. Through this research, we can make a society to be realistic in developing our obsession, assumption, and thought. This research uses Edgar V. Roberts’s theories from his book, Writing Themes about Literature (1964:54). He states that “a character in literature is an extended verbal representation of the human being specially the inner self determines that thought, speech, and behavior.” In addition the writer uses intrinsic approach to gain understanding about the characters and their interaction in the novel. The result of this research shows that the three tupes of irony, namely Verbal Irony, and Situational Irony, and Dramatic Irony are found in the interaction between characters in the novel.   Keywords : Novel, Plot, Characters, Irony, Paper Towns, John Green.

Abstract

ABSTRACT This study which is entitled “Ketidakfasihan Berbicara Para Pemeran dalam Serial Film Harry Potter Enam dan Tujuh (Suatu Analisis Psikolinguistik)” is an attempt to identify the types of speech disfluencies of the characters in the serial films Harry Potter Six and Seven and to analyze the causes of those speech disfluencies. In classifying and analyzing the collected data, the writer uses Fox-Three (1995) and MacGregor’s (2008) theory about the types of speech disfluencies, and Bortfeld’s et al. (2001) theory of what cause the speech disfluencies. It is found that five types of speech disfluencies are produced by the characters in the Serial Films Harry Potter Six and Seven. That types are, silent pause, filled pause, repetition, repair, and lexical filler. Repetitions is the types of disfluencies are the most founded because of the increase  in cognitive process that results to a heavy planning in utterances. The causes of speech disfluencies of the characters in serial films Harry Potter Six and Seven are by variables such as, cognitive load, communication medium, topic under discussion, addressee characteristic, speaker characteristic, as well as social and situational factors. It is because we encounter those variables in almost every time. Age is not found to cause of speech disfluencies in the serial films Harry Potter because as there aren’t many older people characters in the serial films. This study will help students and the next researchers in expanding their knowledge about speech disfluencies and language production.   Keywords: Speech Disfluencies, Harry Potter Films, Psycholinguistic Analysis

Abstract

ABSTRACT This study which is entitled “Social Situation depicted in Carl Sandburg’s Poems” focusing on the social situation  appeared in every single poem written by Carl Sandburg. The writer chooses ten poems which are the most famous literary works by Carl Sandburg and analyzes them by using extrinsic and intrinsic approach to discover the social meaning of every poem.This study uses the theory of Wellek and Werren (1976) about the relationship of literature and life. The purpose of this study is to identify and analyze the social situation in the ten poems written by Carl Sandburg and describe about the social situation depicted in his poems. The result of this study can be summarized as follows: all of the ten poems written by Carl Sandburg describe about the situation in Chicago and some of the poems describe about the nation. The social situation  depicted in Carl Sandburg poems are about poverty of the big city, the situation of the working class in big city, the spirit of people of the nation, social problems in the big city and the rights of poor people. Abstract

ABSTRACT Short story is a piece of prose fiction. Short story features a small cast of named characters, and focuses on a "single effect" or mood which can lead to the next event and storyline. In doing so, short stories make use of plot, resonance, and other dynamic components to a far greater degree than is typical of an anecdote, yet to a far lesser degree than a novel. While the short story is largely distinct from the novel. The Sleeping Beauty in the Wood is one of the famous short story written by Charles Perrault, a famous French writer and important person on his time, depict the social condition on his time where the social stratification happened in the society. This research entitled “Gambaran Stratifikasi Sosial dalam Cerita Pendek The Sleeping Beauty in the Wood Karya Charles Perrault” is created to give explanation about the social stratification that Charles Perrault depict in the short story The Sleeping Beauty in the Wood by using the sociological aspects such as status and honor and intrinsic aspects which mainly focused on expressions, dialogues, and actions through the interaction among the characters. The objectives of this research are to identify and analyze the social stratification depicted by Charles Perrault in The Sleeping Beauty in the Woods. To identify and analyze the short story, the writer uses sociological approach and social theory from Talcott Parsons about social stratification. The Sleeping Beauty in the Wood shows the status of the characters affect the honor influence to the others or otherwise, the honor effect the status of the characters through the dialogues, actions, and expressions which found in the interaction among the characters as the depiction of social stratification. ______________________________________________________________________________ Keywords: short story, social stratification, status, honor, expression, dialogues, actions, expression, the Sleeping Beauty in the Wood.

Abstract

ABSTRACT The title of this study is “Klitik dalam Bahasa Inggris dan Bahasa Toulour (Suatu Analisis Kontrastif)”. The aims of this study is to identify, analyze, and describe the form and function of clitics in English and in Toulour Language, and to find out the similarities and differences of  clitics in both languages by using the theory of Zwicky (1994), Katamba (1994), and Whitman (1970). In this study, the English data were taken from several English books, and Toulour language data were taken from several informants by interviewing them. The method that has been applied in this study is contrastive analysis. The data of this sudy were analyzed descriptively then both languages were contrasted. The result shows that based on forms, English has 15 clitics which are divided into proclitics and enclitics. The function of these clitics are: auxiliary (Zwicky, 1970), adverb (Zwicky and Pullum, 1983), heads (Pullum, 1997), and pronomina (Radford, 1997). Toulour language has only 12 enclitics. The function of this clitics are: auxiliary and pronomina. In terms of similarity, both languages have enclitics, while based on function, both have the functions as auxiliary and pronomina. In terms of differences, based on forms clitics in English have both proclitics and enclitics while clitics in Toulour language have only enclitics. On the other hand, based on functions clitics in English have all four functions (auxiliary, adverb, heads, and pronomina), while clitics in Toulour language have only two functions as auxiliary and pronomina. Abstract

ABSTRACT This research which is entitled “Perdagangan Manusia dalam novel Sold karya Patricia McCormick.” focuses on the theme of the novel that describes about human trafficking. The writer chooses this interesting novel as this novel is one of the McCormick’s works which becomes a National Book Award finalist. The purpose of this study is to identify and categorize the types of human trafficking depicted in the novel. Through this research, the community is expected to know the types of human trafficking and can avoid becoming a victim of human trafficking. The writer uses the intrinsic approach to gain understanding through the plot of the novel and the extrinsic approach to analyze the novel that from social perspective. This research uses the theory from Wellek and Warren (1949), in their book, The Theory of Literature. According to them, literary works are social documents, which reflect a picture of social reality. The result of this research shows that there are many types of human trafficking, reflected through the plot and characters of the novel. Those types are Bonded Labor, Debt Bondage Among Migrant Laborers, Forced Labor, Forced Child Labor, Sex Trafficking, Child Sex Trafficking.   Keywords : Novel, Plot, Human Trafficking, Patricia McCormick
