Abstract

ABSTRACT This research is entitled ?Illocutionary Act in the Film Gifted Hands by John Pielmeier: A Pragmatic Analysis?. It is an analysis of pragmatic investigation that focuses on one aspect of speech act called illocutionary act. It is an attemp to find the kinds and functions of illocutionary act in the film.   The data has been taken from the characters utterances in the film. The writer analyzed the data descriptively by concentrating on utterances which contain illocution. The theory used in this research is taken from Searle?s theory about illocutionary acts classification.   The finding of this research shows the kinds and functions of the illocutionary act that are found in the film Gifted Hands. These are classified into five categories, those are assertives: stating, suggesting, vowing, and reporting; directives: ordering, commending, requesting, and advising; commissives: promising and offering; expressive: thanking, praising, and blaming; declaratives: naming, suspending, and declaring.   Theoretically, the writer extends that this research can give some contribution for students to understand  kinds of illocutionary act and their functions which are not only in this film, but also in other literary works especially in daily communication.   Keywords : Illocutionary, Speech Act, Film Gifted Hands, Pragmatic Analysis

Abstract

ABSTRACT   This study is an attempt to find out, analyze and describethe Adverbs in the novel “HOOK“ by Walter Van Tilburg Clark’s. The data were analyzed based on the theories of Quirk at el (1985) and Frank (1972). The method used in this research was descriptive method. The data of adverbs were taken from the sentences in thenovel “ HOOK “ by Walter Van Tilburg Clark’s. The result of this study shows that that there are 3 kinds of adverbs found in the novel based on the theory of Quirk at el., (1985) namely Simple adverbs, combining adverb  and derivation adverbs. Also there are four functions of  adverb based on the theory of Frank (1972) which are adverbs that functionas verb modifier, adjective modifier , adverb modifier, and sentence modifier. ---------------------------------------------------------------- Keywords: adverbs, English, Analysis, thenovel “HOOK”

Abstract

ABSTRACT This research is entitled “Suffixes in English and Tontemboan language (A Contrastive Analysis)”. The objectives of this research are to identify, classify and describe the suffixes and to analyze the similarities and differences of suffixes used in both languages. This research uses a descriptive method. There are three steps to finish this research, the first step is preparation. In this step, the writer reads some books about suffixes. The second step is data collection. In this step, the writer collect the kind of suffixes that include in suffixes in English and Tontemboan language. The third step is data analysis. In this step, the writer identifies, classifies, and describes the data about suffixes in English and Tontemboan language according to O’Grady and Dobrovolsky’s (1992) theory and then the writer uses Lado (1957) and Whitman (1970) theory to find out the similarities and the differences of the structures in this case the suffixes of both languages in terms of forms, functions and meanings. The result shows that English and Tontemboan language have suffixes. The functions of English Suffixes are to form nouns, verbs, adjectives, and adverbs. While the function of Tontemboan suffixes are nouns, verbs, and adjectives. Keywords: Suffixes, English and Tontemboan language, Contrastive analysis.

Abstract

ABSTRACT   Language is the most important part of human life. In communcation, people do not only utter sentence but also transfer it into behavior. Rejection is a form of communication. Rejectiom refusing something of the hearer and rejection belongs to perlocutionay act. Rejection can be divided into explisit rejection and implisit rejection. The collected data were identified and clasified in terms of explisit rejection and implisit rejection that found from the utterances of the characters. The identified and clasified data then analyzed descrptive based on the aspects of rejection (the aspects of perlocutionary act) that uttered by the characters of in the novel according to Leech (1983) and Crystal (1972) theory. The results show that there are two kinds of perlocutionary act found in the novel The Guardian by Nicholas Spark, those are explisit and implisit perlocutionary act whereas the aspects of rejection found in that novel are to get hearer to think, requesting, starting, and offering. Abstract

ABSTRACT This research is entitled ‘Morphological Process of Nouns in English and Gorontalo Language: a Contrastive Analysis. The objective of the analysis are to identify, and describe the morphological process of nouns in English and Gorontalo language and finding out the similarities and the differences of morphological process of nouns in English and Gorontalo language by using of O’Grady’s (1992) theory and contrastive method using Lado (1957) and Whitman (1970). The English data were collected from several English textbooks. Some of them are Morphology: Word Structure in Generative Grammar (1990) by John T. Jensen, and the data of Gorontalo Language from the native speaker’s four informants who can speak Gorontalo Language at the age of 20-60 years old in Manado. The result of this research shows that in morphological process of nouns in English and Gorontalo language have some similarities and differences. The similarities are that English and Gorontalo language have affixation as prefix and suffix, reduplication as full of reduplication, compounding as endocentries and excocentries compounding. The difference is that English language has not infix affixation but in Gorontalo language has an infix affixation, reduplication in English has full reduplication with variety of phoneme and in Gorontalo languages have a partial reduplication.
