Abstract

ABSTRACT This skripsi entitled “The Irony In Searching The Holy Grail In Novel The Da Vinci Code by Dan Brown” is intended to be one of the requirements to accomplish the Sarjana tittle at Faculty Of Humanities, University Of Sam Ratulangi Manado.  The aims of this research are to identify, classify and analyze the irony and how they are illustrated in searching the Holy Grail and identify and analyze the placement of irony in searching the Holy Grail in novel The Da Vinci Code by Dan Brown.  In conducting this research, the methodology used is descriptive method by Winarno (1984). The approach used in this research is intrinsic approach by Wellek and Warren (1977). Theory of irony by Landy (1972), the classification of irony from theory of Edgar V. Roberts (1983) and theory of plot by Tasrif (in Nurgiyantoro:2002) are used to do the analysis.   The results of this research show that the irony and its three types: verbal irony, dramatic irony and irony of situation are found in the novel. Verbal irony is illustrated through the character of Andre Vernet. Dramatic irony is illustrated through the character’s statement of Teacher. Situational irony is illustrated through the character of Aringarosa. The analysis of the placement of irony shows that the irony elements are placed in rising action, climax and resolution. In rising action, the irony found is verbal irony through the character of Andre Vernet. In climax, the irony found is dramatic irony through the characters of The Teacher and Remy. Abstract

ABSTRACT This research, entitled “Sosial Segregation in I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings by Maya Angelou focuses on the sosiological issue as an extrinsic aspect in literature particularly in prose. The writer decides to use the autobiographical novel by Maya Angelou as the object of this research because of the strong theme and atmosphere of sosiological issue depicted in it. The problem of this research is the social segregation as a discriminative action by one superior social community toward another inferior social community. The writer uses the theory of sociology in literature by Alan Swingewood as the basis to analyze the problem of this research. The result of this research shows that Maya Angelou used her childhood life story through inter-character dialogues and her narrative to depict the social segregation in her autobiographical novel which is also her social criticism. Through this research, the readers are expected to understand about the segregation and discriminative actions particularly in racism, because those actions still exist even in this modern era.   Keywords : Autobiographical Novel, Maya Angelou, Social Segregation, Discrimination

Abstract

ABSTRACT This research entitled “Preposition in the Book of Exodus” is written to identify and classify the forms as well as the meanings of the preposition found in the book of Exodus. The writer uses a theory from Aarts and Aarts (1982) to classify the forms of preposition and from Harman (1986) to analyze the meaning of prepositions. The method used in this research is descriptive method, and the data were taken from the book of Exodus based on The Holy Bible New International Version. The forms of the preposition found in the Book of Exodus are: simple preposition (one-word preposition) consisting of: at, before, from, in, between, by, during, of, on, since, until, and with, and complex prepositions (multi-word preposition) consisting of: according to, as to, because of, in addition to, in front of, and out of. Meanwhile, the meanings of prepositions found in this book are: cause or reason, condition, direction, instrument, manner, participation, place, purpose, source, and time. __________________________________________________________________­­­_______ Key words: Preposition, Forms and Meanings, The Book of Exodus in the Bible

Abstract

ABSTRAC The aims of this study is to identify, classify and analyze the types of deixis in the novel "Assalamulaikum Beijing" by Asma Nadia and explain why authors use deixis in the novel "Assalamulaikum Beijing". The method used in this study is a qualitative method using qualitative descriptive data and using the theory of Purwo (1983) and Putrayasa (2014). Analysis of the use of deixis in the dialogue contained in the novel, is divided into five sections: deixis persona, place deixis, time deixis, discourse deixis and social deixis.                Study pragmatic dialogue novel "Assalamualikum Beijing" by Asma Nadia Reviewing about deixis with the study of deixis first person (I, my, me), deixis second person (you, they), deixis third person (she, it), deixis first person to second person (us), deixis person first without the second person (we), second person is more than one (you), deixis third person more than one (they) deixis a locative (here, there), deixis place demonstrative ( this, it is), deixis of time (past, present, earlier), discourse deixis (this, that), social deixis (use a polite word). deixis is often used by authors and frequently appears in this research that deixis persona second category a total of 77 pieces, 74 pieces deixis third person and first person deixis 66 pieces. Abstract

ABSTRACT The literary work is an art form shown by language. Literary works have two functions, that‟s, to entertain and educate. A novel, which is a longer form of a short story or a novella, is able to present the development of the characters. There are many types of characters that exist in literature, each with its own development and function. The general purpose of characters is to extend the plot. Many stories employ multiple types of characters. Every story must have main characters. This study is entitled “Analisis Karakter Tokoh Utama Dan Gambaran Kehidupan Pengarang Dalam Novel David Copperfield Karya Charles Dickens”  The aims of the research is how the characters of the main character are portrayed in the novel David Copperfield. Theory of Robert Stanton (1965) about main character is used to identify and analyze the main character by the words, behavior, conversation and action. Intrinsic approach is used to analyzing the personalities for the main character and extrinsic approach is used to connect the story with other knowledge, in this case the biography of Charles Dickens.     The result of this research shows that the main character personalities are diligent, rigid, plain, hard worker, romantic, loyal and loving. Charles Dickens life are portrayed through the main character in novel, on their childhood is describe through the character words, work is describe through the character words and life on family are describe through character words, character behavior and conversation between characters. This research is expected to provide more information about the main character and connection with the life of the author to the reader. Abstract

ABSTRACT This research which entitled “Tanda Ikon Dalam Komik One Punch Man Karya One Suatu Analisis Semiotik” is focused on icon that can be found in the comic One Punch Man. The aims of this research are to identify kinds and forms of icon in the comic One Punch Man and to analyze the meaning of each frame in the comic One Punch Man. This research uses the McCloud and Zoest’s theories in the process to identifying kinds and forms of icon and to analyze the meaning of each frame in the comic One Punch Man uses Berger’s theory. The method of this research is descriptive. Every icon that can be found in the comic were identified and classified into four forms of icon which are human icon, animal icon, object icon, onomatopoeia icon and three kinds of icon which are typological icon, diagrammatic icon, and metaphoric icon. Then, every frame in the comic were analyzed by using Berger’s Theory. The result of this research shows that there are 42 human icon, 7 animal icon, 24 object icon, and 7 onomatopoeia icon, according to kinds, typological icon contained in 18 frame, diagrammatic icon contained in 30 frame and metaphoric icon contained in 30 frame.
